Ever since Cheltenham Equine was founded 11 years ago we have used automated reminder systems for vaccinations and dentals.

We have always made it clear that these are a courtesy and that ultimately owners are responsible for ensuring appointments are booked to keep vaccinations in date.

Sadly, the Practice is increasingly being blamed for lapsed vaccines. With this in mind, we are considering the following options and would like to know how clients feel:
A) Keep the current reminder system on the understanding owners are ultimately responsible.
B) Don't send reminders and book next appointment at time of invoice payment.
C) No reminders and no future appointment booked.

Cutaneous Habronemiasis aka Summer Sores. These sores typically occur in more tropical climates, but are becoming more common in the UK. They are caused by a type of (harmless) stomach worm, Habronema, that has part of its life cycle in flies.
If horses get small abrasions on their lips, flies can deposit the larval stage of the worm into the abrasion that then develops into larger, non-healing sores.
These sores don’t tend to heal on their own, and should resolve after a one off dose of wormer. If they don’t then heal, further investigation is required as other causes of non-healing wounds can be a foreign body (e.g a thorn) or a sarcoid.

EQUINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAK
The number of Equine Influenza cases has markedly increased during April and May with outbreaks reported in Gloucestershire and surrounding counties.
The majority of cases are seen in unvaccinated horses or horses with lapsed vaccines but cases can be seen in vaccinated horses, although these tend to be less severely affected. We would advise all horses are vaccinated and any horse that have not been vaccinated within the last 6 months have a booster to boost immunity. This is particularly important for horses that are competing and travelling.
We would advise isolating all new arrivals and monitoring all horses for any symptoms which include cough, nasal discharge, lethargy and inappetance.
