🩸🐾 World Blood Donor Day 🐾🩸
Today, we're celebrating the pawesome heroes who help save lives every day❤️

🚑 Just like people, dogs and cats sometimes need blood transfusions in emergencies, during surgery, or while receiving treatment for serious illnesses. A single donation can make a life-saving difference for another pet in need.

🏥 🩸Did you know that dogs and cats have different blood types, just like people?
🐶 Dogs have more than 12 recognised blood groups, known as Dog Erythrocyte Antigens (DEAs).
🐱 Cats have three main blood types: A, B and AB.

🐾 If you think your pooch would make a good blood donor - please visit the Pet Blood Bank website

☀️🐾 Summer Heat Safety for Pets 🐾☀️

As temperatures rise this June, it’s important to help keep your pets safe and comfortable in the heat.
☀️Pets can overheat much faster than people, especially during walks, car journeys, and outdoor play.

🍦🍭Here are a few simple ways to protect them this summer:

🧊 Fresh water always available
🌅 Walkies early morning or later evening
🔥 Pavements too hot for bare feet = too hot for paws
🍦 Frozen treats and cooling mats make great summer enrichment
🌳 🐹🐰Shade is your pet’s best friend especially for rabbits and guinea pigs
🚫 Never leave pets in cars — not even “just for 5 minutes”

Some pets are more at risk 🚨
🐾 Flat-faced breeds (pugs,bulldogs,Persian cats)
🐾 Older pets
🐾 Overweight animals,
🐾 Pets with existing health conditions.

Keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke:
⚠️ Heavy panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Weakness or wobbliness
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Collapse

☎️ If you’re concerned your pet may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine safely! ☀️🐕🐈🐰🐹

🌧️🐾 More Cases of Gastroenteritis in Dogs

We’re currently seeing an increase in dogs with gastroenteritis, causing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, and lethargy.

This can be more common after periods of heavy rainfall following a long dry spell, as bacteria, parasites, and other contaminants can be washed into puddles and standing water that dogs may drink from or play in.

To help reduce the risk:
💧 Avoid letting your dog drink from puddles or stagnant water
🐾 Wash muddy paws and dirty coats after walks
🚶 Take fresh water with you on walks

If your dog develops vomiting, diarrhoea, or seems unwell, please contact the team at Culverden Vets for advice.
