😍Star of the week!😍
This is Seren’s first road hack since she came to us to be started under saddle three weeks ago.
She is a stunning young mare with lovely dressage breeding who we hope will suit her fabulous Young Rider down to the ground.
And hats off to our apprentice, Daisy, who accompanied them on her new Horse, Norman.
On days like these and on horses like these, we have the best job around!

TO SNACK OR NOT TO SNACK?! 🍏
I love this picture of Sammy and Bratz at a recent camp. Mainly because Bratz, who is a very "hot" horse looks so relaxed!
I never mind giving a horse the chance to have a snack during a break in their training or ride. The chewing motion activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the "rest and digest" state. It lowers the horse's heart rate, reduces stress hormones, and releases endorphins.
However, I do try and make it happen on my terms, rather than the horse's... it's not fun having the reins snatched out of your hands as your horse makes a beeline for the long grass 😉.

Tuesday Check In!
When we first met this chap, he was extremely wary of humans and any contact. He was highly reactive and sensitive, and we spent longer on his groundwork foundations before we were able to get some rides in during his first four weeks with us.
Today we’re seeing how he comes back into work following a month’s break in the paddock. The extra time we took to prepare him for ride work looks like it has paid off as he went off relaxed and accepting of the rider… good news! Hopefully he is now well on his way to not only becoming a safe and happy horse on the ground and under saddle, but fulfilling his enormous potential as an event horse 🤞👌😁

"PLAY WHAT'S IN FRONT OF YOU"
I love a good saying, so I was thrilled to receive this notebook (and a bottle of Aussie Bundaberg Rum!) from the UK Polocrosse Team, whom I recently coached in America and Zimbabwe. Printed on the cover was the phrase that became our mantra throughout the tours:
"Play what's in front of you."

It was a wonderful thank-you gift, but it also struck me that this could easily be the motto for Your Horsemanship's "Out and About" theme this spring!

I wanted a quick way of keeping the players present, looking ahead, not getting in their own head about what they should and shouldn't be doing, and refocusing quickly after each play, good or bad.

To bring this back to you and your horses, so many of our doubts about getting out and enjoying adventures with our horses come from the "what ifs," the "buts,"and the "I don't knows." We worry about what might happen before we've even left the yard.

But what if we trusted ourselves to deal with things as and when they happened? What if our outlook was positive and our focus remained on where we wanted to go, rather than on all the things that could go wrong?

The reality is that most of the things we imagine could happen never do. And if something unexpected does arise, chances are you'll be able to handle it. After all, every experience builds confidence, knowledge, and resilience, for both you and your horse.

And if you do find yourself facing something you're not sure how to manage, remember that you have a support system behind you. That's exactly what we're here for at Your Horsemanship. We even have a masterclass from the wonderful Madi Kish from at the end of this month to help you achieve this mindset!

This spring, let's focus on what's in front of us, embrace new experiences, and enjoy getting out and about with our horses.

A few snaps from Day 3 of our Spring Camp!
And what a camp it was... we managed to dodge the weather and all 14 of our riders took on board our camp theme of "independence" with gusto!
Day 3 saw them learn about Barrel Racing with Luke Burridge and how it can transfer to the other equestrian disciplines, go through their paces in a fun flatwork lesson with Sam Newberry, and then head out on a hack round our beautiful farm with the most stunning views over the Weald of Kent 👌.
As always, the success and popularity of our camps depend on our brilliant coaches; Tom Mitchell Equine Behaviour, Sam Newberry, Luke Burridge, Camilla Kruger, and our very own Hamish Gillanders, Caroline Barbour and Jason Webb. Thanks also to Madi Kish and In Hand Equine Osteopathy for their evening talks, they were fantastic.
Lastly, a huge thanks to those behind the scenes making it all happen; Luisa, Daisy and Camilla on the yard, Penny and Jem for their organisation, Anna for her delicious food and Sophie for her sublime hosting skills!

I am delighted to be heading down to Wiltshire for a day of teaching individual and group clinics on the 8th June at the fantastic facilities of the Tedworth Equestrian Centre at the invite of Bourne Valley Riding Club.
This will be followed by a relaxed, intimate outdoor demonstration of how we work through ground and ridden issues with a wide range of horses. Plenty of time for Q&A, too!
At the same time, there will be an opportunity to learn about the work of the and support them through a charity raffle.

Brilliant 2nd Day at our Spring 3 Day Camp! The theme is "Independence", and our riders did some practical desensitising with Hamish (think picking up hi-vis vests for hacking, "parking" your horse up at the mounting block, picking up mugs of tea 🤣), negotiating obstacles with Jason whilst heading out and about round the farm, and a polework/ jump clinic with the fabulous Camilla Kruger. They're now looking forward to putting all their new found confidence into practice tomorrow! 🤞

Jason's on pheasant watch!
🐎 Tuesday Check-In 🐎
Join Jason, Caroline, and Hamish aboard Maggie, Sindy, and Toos as they head out for a canter across the top fields. Take in the stunning Kentish views and admire Caroline's impressive filming skills while riding a young horse😂.
Maggie takes the pheasants in her stride, but that open gate was apparently a different story... 😅
Joking aside, experiences like these are an important part of a horse's education. Learning to settle in open fields, canter alongside other horses, and cope with unexpected wildlife helps build confidence, trust, and security. All of this lays the foundation for a happy, reliable riding horse that owners can enjoy, whatever discipline they choose to pursue.

...BUT...
I'm proud of my Aussie farming heritage 🐮🐑
Farming is real.
You learn to improvise.
You learn to take responsibility and make tough decisions.
You understand animals as animals; their behaviour, their needs, their environment.
You care deeply for animals without humanising them.
But good stockmanship also takes finesse, expertise and nuance.
Reading tiny changes in behaviour, movement and energy before they become problems👌
Attention to detail and an understanding that takes a lifetime to accumulate.
There’s real pressure too.
Farmers have to produce the goods to stay in business, and that's what clients expect from me, too.
Farmers work with they've got, and so have I... all horses, no matter their history or the expectations of their future.
No picking and choosing an easy route.
Mud, broken gates, bad weather, long days and jobs that still need doing whether you feel like it or not.
Keeping old tools and vehicles going because they still do the job, but saving for new kit that brings real benefits.
Wranglers, checked shirts, Blundstones… practical clothes for practical work, not for the socials 😉.
So yes, agricultural... I choose to take that as a compliment 🚜... just don't ask me to sing 🎤 (shout out to the The Hawkstone Farmers Choir !)

We held our very first "Create a Camp" with these fab riders who have been coming on camps for as long as I can remember!
