Another Letter Home from Luna & Evie (Still Canadian, Still Fabulous) π¨π¦πΎ
Dear Max, Nel, Bonnie, Molly and all the Kingscote Doodles puppies,
It's us again! We have important news from Canada, and we shall start with the photographic evidence attached.
Yes, that is me, Evie, having fully mastered the Canadian art of "poolside lounging." Note the blissful smile. Note the professional-grade relaxation. I have appointed myself Chief Sunbathing Supervisor of this household, and I take my duties very seriously. There is a blanket. There is sunshine. There is someone to gaze at adoringly until snacks materialise. Frankly, I've never worked harder in my life.
Meanwhile β see second photo β I (Luna) have taken on an altogether more serious role: Head of Garden Security. Because girls and boys, the wildlife over here is NOT mucking about. Forget the odd pheasant in Devon. Here we have RACCOONS β little masked bandits who raid the bins like furry burglars. We have COYOTES β basically wolves who've heard about us doodles and fancy their chances. Both have actually been SEEN in this very garden, so as you can imagine, I am on constant high alert. That is not a relaxed tail in the photo. That is a tactical tail.
And then there are SKUNKS. We haven't met one yet, thank goodness, but the locals speak of them in hushed tones. Apparently if one gets you, you stink all the way to the Rocky Mountains and back β and then it's straight into a bath of tomato juice. We've agreed that if we ever see one, our strategy is simple: run. With dignity, obviously. But run.
Now, on to the other shocking bit. Are you sitting comfortably? Perhaps lie down for this one.
Over here, we have to walk on a LEAD. Everywhere. Even in the parks! You simply clip on and stay clipped on, like it's the 1800s. Apparently the only place you're allowed to gallop about freely is a special fenced bit called an "off-leash area" β a designated zoomies zone, if you will. You wait your whole walk for it, like pudding.
We thought about Devon and nearly wept into our water bowls. Remember charging across the fields with the wind in our ears? Remember the beach? THE BEACH?! Here, freedom is scheduled and signposted. We have to do our zoomies by appointment.
On the bright side, the off-leash parks are actually rather brilliant β dozens of new friends, all shapes and sizes, and everybody's got that slightly manic "WE'RE FREE!" energy because we've all been on leads for days. It's like the first day of the summer holidays, every single time.
And honestly, between the pool, the sofa, the sunbathing duties, the security patrols and the endless belly rubs, we're coping remarkably well. One must suffer for paradise.
Bernie and Lynn are still here with us β we're keeping them thoroughly exercised. Give everyone at Kingscote a good sniff from us, and warn the puppies: if they ever move to Canada, practise their lead manners first. It's the LAW, apparently.
Lots of licks and appointed-zoomies from across the pond,
Luna & Evie π
