Travellers at Appleby Fair have been in the news lately and not in a good way. This tradition of selling and showing off their horses and ponies has been well and truly exposed for what it is. A young recently gelded pony was found dead, the marks which say who he belongs to were disfigured. No one wanted to stand up and say ‘yes, I am the cruel bastard who did this to this pony.’ Big enough to inflict cruelty, but not big enough to accept responsibility.
When I lived in Somerset, Travellers would often race their ponies along the A303, along the Illminster Bypass and up towards Martock. The police would stand idly by whilst traffic built up behind them.
Every year here in South Devon they drive their ponies through heavy traffic. Ponies and gigs/sulkys bouncing off cars wily nily. I have witnessed this myself. I have seen social media saying how wonderful this sight was. Every. Single. Year. Often these animals are just running through sheer terror and are then tied up outside pubs, whilst their drivers are having a drink. There is no drink for the ponies as they stand there with their sides heaving and heads on the floor.
Not every traveller is cruel to their horse or pony. Some of these animals are very well cared for and the quality of both horsemanship and horse are excellent.
But I am sick of seeing the second rate travellers with their under fed, weak, youngsters, some of them just older than foals, being pounded on tarmac dragging two or more adults behind them until they are exhausted.
And before you spout on about it being a tradition. It’s a s**t tradition when animals are routinely abused especially at such a young age. They clearly are not fed properly, they just aren’t cared for. Chucked out in a field, if they are lucky, with random stallions covering everything with a pulse.
The resulting foals being born from poor worm ridden mares, often just babies themselves, to carry on the tradition of pulling a sulky, being raced on roads. The sick orphaned foals being dumped on roadsides. Left to die alone.
There are a number of petitions on change.org to challenge this so-called sport. Please have a look.
