🚧 UPCOMING ROAD CLOSURE 🚧

📅 From 24th October to 7th November, Wolborough Street in Newton Abbot (by Asda and The Gym) will be closed for major roadworks. 📅

🚘 Pease bear this in mind when planning your journey to and from South Devon Vets in Abbotskerswell and plan a different route accordingly.

🆘 ‼️ If your pet is critically unwell and you have an emergency situation, please call ahead to our reception team on 01626 367972 and select the emergency line, inform the team you have an emergency and they will speak to highways and ask for the road to be temporarily opened for you to reach the hospital as quickly as possible. When you reach the roadworks inform the staff that you have a veterinary emergency and need to get to the hospital and you will be let through. 🆘 ‼️

✋🏼Please not that this closure does NOT affect our Torquay or Kingsteignton branches.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

😍 We had our bi-weekly visit from Marley yesterday for a weigh in!

⚖️ If you remember, a few weeks ago we posted Marley and she was 25kg. Well, yesterday she weighed in at just under 35kg!

Shes a Bernese Mountain Dog and classed as a giant breed so she’ll continue to grow until she’s about 18 months old! She’s only 6 months old currently so she’s got plenty of growing left to do! 📏

We love having Marley in regularly for weigh ins and fuss! It allows her to get used to coming to the vets and getting to know all of us, so if she ever needs to come in for treatment, she’ll be less worried because it’ll all be familiar to her! ♥️

🐾 This golden oldie is Dexter! 😍

Dexter came into us yesterday because he’d managed to sneak an entire bowl of chocolate coated Brazil nuts off the kitchen side! 😮

Dexter’s owners, knowing chocolate can be seriously toxic to our canine companions, rushed him into the surgery double quick so we could make him vomit 🤮… poor Dexter!
He thought all his Christmases had come at once and he’d hit the jackpot! 😂

💉 A quick jab of vomit inducing medication and 15 minutes later, all those lovely chocolate Brazil nuts were in the bin, and good job too, as Dexter had ingested a toxic dose of theobromine (the chemical in cocoa that causes toxicity).

🩺 A couple of hours of monitoring and TLC and Dexter was off home again to enjoy the rest of his holiday.

💭 Remember, any chocolate containing cocoa can be highly toxic to dogs. The darker the chocolate, the higher the risk.

Symptoms of chocolate toxicity can include:

🍫 vomiting
🍫 diarrhoea
🍫 abdominal pain
🍫 rapid breathing/panting
🍫 seizures
🍫 abnormal heat rhythm
🍫 fast heart beat
🍫 coma
🍫 death

If you’re concerned your pet has eaten chocolate, it’s important to note the amount you suspect has been eaten, how dark the chocolate is and how long ago you suspect it was eaten.

🕰️ Prompt intervention saves lives!
