This handsome guy is 10 year old Oscar who belongs to our head nurse Erin. Oscar has routine Wellness Screens done every year and this year the tests detected signs of diabetes mellitus! Older, overweight cats are at a higher risk of developing diabetes mellitus and Oscar's weight had been on a steady incline for a few years- time to fix that!

Thankfully because Oscar wasn't yet showing any signs of diabetes there was still time to reverse the diabetes before it fully developed as then he would need medication to control it.

Oscar was immediately put onto a weight control diet designed to facilitate safe and healthy weight loss and over a few months he lost 1kg (about 15%!) and is now a perfect weight! Well done Oscar 🥰

The best things to come from his weight loss is that he is much more comfortable in his movements, he is more satiated and asks for food less, his coat is nicer and he no longer has any glucose in his urine and his blood tests showed his blood glucose levels are normal so the "pre diabetes" has been cured!

Now if Oscar remains a healthy condition score then he will hopefully continue to live a diabetic free life ❤️

Hello and welcome to our newest member Erin! Erin is joining Team Woodside from SRUC as a third year veterinary nursing student. She will be with us for a year to complete her Nursing Progress Log (NPL) which is no easy task. Erin has a guinea pig called Renton and enjoys painting and hiking!
