🐍🦎 NATIONAL REPTILE AWARENESS DAY! 🦎🐢
Let’s show some love to the scales, tails and tiny tongues that make the reptile world absolutely incredible! 💚
Here at The Pets Empawrium, we’re passionate about reptiles, and we want to share some facts that might just surprise you! 👀
🤯 DID YOU KNOW?
🐍 Snakes can smell with their tongues! They collect tiny chemical particles from the air and transfer them to a special organ in the roof of their mouths called the Jacobson’s organ. That’s why you see them flicking their tongues!
🦎 Crested geckos can drop their tails, but they can’t grow them back! Unlike leopard geckos, who can regenerate their tails, crested geckos usually live the rest of their lives without one. Their tails are not essential for survival, but they do help with balance and climbing.
🐢 Tortoises can feel through their shells! Their shells aren’t just armour. They contain nerves and are connected to their skeleton, meaning they can feel pressure and touch.
🐉 Bearded dragons can communicate by waving! A slow, raised-arm wave can be a social signal, often associated with recognising another dragon or showing submission. It’s not just them saying hello to their humans! 👋
🦎 Geckos can climb smooth surfaces thanks to microscopic structures on their toes! These structures create incredibly close contact with surfaces, allowing many species to cling to glass and even walk upside down.
🐍 Not all snakes lay eggs! Some species give birth to live young, while others retain eggs inside their bodies until the babies are ready to emerge.
🌍 Reptiles are important to our ecosystems! They help control insect and rodent populations, provide food for other wildlife and play a vital role in maintaining nature’s balance.
💚 And here’s something every reptile lover should remember: reptiles aren’t low-maintenance pets just because they don’t need walking. They have specialised needs, including the right temperatures, UVB lighting where required, humidity, nutrition and enrichment. A proper setup can make all the difference to their health and wellbeing.
Let’s also remember that wild reptiles belong in the wild. Never take them from their natural habitats, and always choose responsible, knowledgeable sources when considering a reptile as a pet.
🦎 Whether you’re team beardie, gecko, snake or tortoise, let’s celebrate these extraordinary animals and help more people understand just how amazing they are!
