People often ask us what it’s like living with parrots.

The truth?

We don’t own Pip.

Pip owns us. 🤣

Need proof?

☎️ If the phone rings, Pip needs to know who’s calling.

📺 If a film is on, Pip decides whether it’s acceptable viewing.

🎵 If the wrong music comes on, he’ll complain until it’s changed.

🍎 If we’re eating, Pip conducts a full quality inspection.

🛋️ If Pip wants a cuddle, whatever we’re doing immediately becomes less important.

Because let’s be honest, he’s the one making all the important decisions around here! 😂

Parrots are incredibly intelligent and full of personality. One of the things we love most about them is that they don’t just live in our homes – they become part of the family and quickly establish themselves somewhere between feathered child, tiny dinosaur and demanding CEO.

We’re really happy to welcome Kenneth the cockatiel to BeakyMinders.

Kenneth is just a baby and he’s come to stay with us while his family are away. He’s had a big change in routine, but he’s already doing really well and starting to find his feet with us.

Right now he’s all about exploring, watching everything going on, and quietly working out where he fits into the household. It’s lovely seeing his little personality start to come through—curious, a bit cautious at times, but definitely interested in everything around him.

While he’s with us, we’ll keep things calm, consistent, and full of gentle reassurance so he can feel safe and settled until he’s back home again.

We’re really looking forward to getting to know Kenneth a bit better over the next few days and sharing little updates as he settles. 🥰🤗🐥🦜🐥🤗

🎬🦜 Do Your Parrots Have Favourite Films? 🦜🎬

One thing that always fascinates me about parrots is just how much personality they have!

Whenever we have to leave the house, Pip usually gets his own entertainment put on. Over time, he’s developed some very strong opinions about what he likes to watch… and what he definitely doesn’t! 😂

His absolute favourites are the Rio films, Paulie (the story of a lost parrot trying to find his owner), and the How To Train Your Dragon movies. The moment the opening music starts, he gets visibly excited, climbs to his favourite perch, starts bobbing his head, and settles down to watch.

It’s not just films either. Pip has favourite songs and music playlists too. Put on something he enjoys and he’ll happily dance along. Put on something he dislikes and he’ll make sure everyone knows about it by screaming at me until I change it! 🤣

From a psychological perspective, appropriate visual and audio stimulation can help reduce boredom and provide enrichment when parrots are left alone. While it’s no substitute for social interaction, toys, training, and out-of-cage time, many parrots seem to enjoy having familiar sounds and movement in the background.

It makes sense when you think about it – parrots are highly intelligent, social creatures that naturally spend much of their day interacting with their flock and environment.

One thing I’ve really enjoyed since starting Beaky Minders is meeting so many different bird owners and learning from them.

If there’s one thing I’ve discovered, it’s that there’s rarely just one “right” way to do things when it comes to parrots and bird keeping. Ask ten experienced bird owners the same question and you’ll often get ten different answers!

That’s why we’ve never wanted to position ourselves as the people who know everything. There are breeders, behaviour specialists, trainers, vets, rescue volunteers and lifelong bird keepers out there with decades more experience than us, and we love learning from every one of them.

For us, the joy is in the journey. Meeting amazing birds, hearing their stories, sharing what we learn, and connecting with a community that is just as passionate about parrots as we are.

The day you think you know it all is probably the day you stop learning.

We’re grateful to everyone who shares their knowledge with us and helps us become better bird carers every day. 🦜❤️

After all, the best thing about the bird community isn’t who has all the answers — it’s how much we can learn from each other.
