⛈️ Stormy Weather Warning 🍁

⚠️ Storm Austen is expected to increase seed drop and spread Sycamore seeds with the strong winds‼️ Atypical Myopathy Warning ‼️

🌳 Atypical myopathy is caused by horses eating sycamore seeds that fall onto pasture in Autumn and Winter, and their germinating seedlings in Spring.

☠️ Seeds and seedlings contain the toxin hypoglycin A (HGA) which slows or stops energy production in muscle and heart.

🐴 Symptoms include reluctance to move, depression, low hanging head, dark brown or red urine, muscle trembling and colic like symptoms without a loss of appetite. These symptoms can rapidly progress to collapse and difficulty breathing.

⚠️ Atypical myopathy is fatal in up to 80% of cases. Rapid diagnosis is essential.

‼️ Prevention tips

🌟Provide supplementary forage during Autumn away from the tree line.
🌟Clear fallen sycamore leaves and seeds from grazing areas.
🌟Remove horses from affected grazing areas.
🌟Check neighbouring areas for high risk plants/seeds as some ‘helicopter’ seeds can travel up to 200 yards.
🌟Test for the presence of HGA in your own horses’ pastures

ℹ️ EGUS or Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome is a prevalent condition affecting many horses.

🐎 While some cases show obvious clinical signs such as weight loss, girthiness, poor condition, poor hair coat or drop in performance, others do not show any or very little and suffer in silence.

🐴 Gastroscopy is the only diagnostic procedure that can determine the location and type of lesions present, it is well tolerated and straight forward 😃🐴

Walk for Wellbeing 2026 - Berkshire Challenge.

🤩 Our vet Jon is doing a 16 mile charity walk today raising money for young people's mental health. In particular Charlie Waller Trust who are an amazing charity!
The trust provides free training and resources to those who are best placed to help children who are struggling, including parents and carers, teachers and community workers. Walk for wellbeing will raise money for this vital work.

ℹ️ Whilst Autumn is taking its time being a little aloof, we certainly are not. As always we are here for you 365 days a year 24 hours a day, you can rest assured it will only ever be one of our own vets who attends with your horses full clinical notes when you need us most. This weekend we have Lana Duty Vet Friday night, Amy takes over as vet on duty from Saturday for the remainder of the weekend, they will be accompanied by Ellie.

🎉 The whole team at The Barn Equine Surgery is feeling very proud, and would like to thank all who nominated us.

😍 We are extremely proud to be one of very few remaining independent veterinary practices that cover Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire.
We provide a high level of equine veterinary care with a wide array of practice facilities including stabling for overnight or longer term patient care, a variety of clinics, a lameness work up area complete with outdoor school for full assessments, advanced dentistry facilities, surgical suite, our own in-house laboratory, endoscopy, radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) and we are a BEVA approved artificial insemination centre to mention just a little of what we offer and are very proud of.
