I feel very lucky to live where I do 🌅 and this sunrise certainly made it easier to be up so early with the boys 🐾
Mixing training in with walks is probably something you already do 🐶 simply rewarding more of the behaviours you want to see can make a huge difference to your dog walks 💚

Last month, I filmed a group class, completed my IMDT assessment… and then promptly convinced myself I’d failed! 😂

So imagine my surprise when, a week ago, an email landed in my inbox saying “Congratulations, you’ve passed!” 🎉🐾

I still didn’t quite believe it until today, when my official certificate arrived — and I can finally say it properly…

I PASSED! 🥳

At this point, I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped me get here.

To the volunteers who gave up their time and allowed me to film them for my group class assessment, to the clients who trusted me with their dogs and have taught me just as much as I’ve helped them, and to everyone who has supported, encouraged and believed in me along the way — thank you. ❤️

It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of learning and apparently a lot of unnecessary worrying 😂 but I did it!

However, the learning never stops! I will continue to do everything I can to be the best I can be for you and your dogs 💚

🐾 Even a trainer needs a trainer! 🐾

Last night, Hank and I are started a 6-week puppy course together! 🎓

Yes, I’m a dog trainer. Yes, I train Hank every day. But there’s something really valuable about stepping out of the trainer role and simply being Hank’s owner for an hour- and it was exactly what I needed- just to be his mum 💚

A group class gives us the chance to work around other dogs and people, practise settling and focusing in a busy environment, and — most importantly — gives me dedicated time where my only job is to concentrate on him.

Good dog training isn’t about knowing everything or doing everything alone. Sometimes it’s nice to be the student, have another pair of eyes on you, and just enjoy learning with your dog. ❤️

So, for the next six Monday evenings, Hank and I are off to school! 🐶📚

Wish us luck… although last night showed me, we don’t need luck at all🍀 we just needed some us time 🐾

Today we took some time off from everything work related… except dogs of course! 🐾
We took Mr Hank to his first ever dog show- while we didn’t enter him into any of the events (we didn’t want to overwhelm him) he had a fabulous time meeting other dogs, getting lots of fuss and choosing his own toy to bring home 🏡
We hope you’ve all had a weekend as fun packed as ours 💚

💤 Puppies need more sleep than you might think! 💭

Growing is exhausting work…
Puppies can need around 18–20 hours of sleep a day, and getting enough rest is just as important as training, exercise and enrichment 🍖
An overtired puppy often doesn’t look tired either… they can look like they’ve suddenly turned into a tiny land shark 🦈 or a ferocious dinosaur 🦖.

So if your adorable puppy suddenly gets the zoomies, starts biting everything in sight (including your ankles) or seems unable to listen… they might not need more exercise or entertainment 🎪

They might just need a good sleep 💤🐾

Why would we deliberately go out to train in the pouring rain last night? 🌧️

Because we were thinking about the “3 Ds” of dog training: Distance, Duration and Distraction.

Hank knows the basics on how to retrieve, so now we can start gradually making it more difficult. 🎾

Last night we chose to work on DISTRACTION.

We went to the park Hank has visited before, but has never practised his retrieve in. The rain meant new smells, wet grass and LOTS of rabbit poo 🐇😂 — but it also meant something very useful…

Hardly anybody else was there- in fact we had the whole park to ourselves! 🙌

So rather than adding a new environment + dogs + people + smells + everything else at once, we deliberately chose a time when we could control some of those distractions.

And he smashed it. ❤️

We kept the retrieves achievable and stopped while he was still succeeding.

But most importantly- it was fun! 🤩 it didn’t feel like a training session for Hank!

The 3 Ds don’t all need to get harder at the same time.

Change one thing at a time and set your dog up for success. 🐾

I’ve been pretty quiet over the last few weeks 🐶 and that’s because I’ve just needed time 🕰️

Time for my health 💓
Time for my puppy 🐾
Time to reflect 🍀

Over the last few weeks me and Hank have had some great days 🙌 and some really difficult days 😔

And I have had to remind myself a lot “he’s just a puppy who’s learning”… 🤦🏼‍♀️ but that sentence doesn’t always help when you’re feeling overwhelmed by the relentless biting, barking and “we didn’t learn any recall” walks 🐕

What I have tried to do instead over the past few days is ask myself what is going well and what have we achieved!? 🙌

-Potty training ✅
-Basic skills ✅
-Car rides improved ✅
-Recall progress ✅
-Sleeping through the night ✅
-Loose Lead Walking ✅ (until someone says hi 😂)

It’s so easy to concentrate on what’s difficult that we forget to see our success and how far we’ve come ☀️

My conclusion: Hank is hard work- but that’s ok 👌 I love him exactly the way he is 💚
