See you there! X

This evening, 6.30pm!

Helen Kay from Cleveland Dogs is joining us live this evening to talk about Ugly Walks for reactive and distracted dogs. I first met Helen when we both worked at Dogs Trust, and before that she worked at Guide Dogs and as a Police dog handler. She now offers her behaviourist services exclusively to Club Dogwood members. She’s knowledgeable, experienced and a lovely person – I can’t wait!

FUN CHARITY EVENT!
Welcome to the 2020 Snuffle-mat-a-thon!

😊In 2019 Katie from Dogwood and Helen from Cleveland Dogs hosted our first ever Snuffle-mat-a-thon!

😊We all made an amazing 29 Snuffle Mats and raised £210, all of which were donated and gratefully received by our local rescue centres.

🤣We were such busy bees we even ran out of material and ended up raiding our cars for blankets to provide extra strips of fabric to finish our mats!

🤩🤩Can we beat last years' record?

This year due to Covid we have had to tweak things a little (well a lot!!) but WE CAN DO THIS!

🤗🤗Our mission is to see if we can increase our snuffle mat production line... (Odd numbers look so untidy... let's get even this year!)

Our Rescue dogs really need us more than ever with all of the uncertainty in our world at the moment and the snuffle mats will provide them with excellent enrichment whilst they await their new homes.

🐶🐶Book now for our Charity Evening! 🐶🐶

For just £10 we will provide you with an action-packed Zoom evening on:

🐾THURSDAY 3RD DECEMBER STARTING 6PM

Including:

🐾Online Tuition from the amazing Rachel from Evanza Design. Rachel will be demonstrating how to make doggy tug toys and if you wish to make extra for our Rescues that would be great too.

🐾Online Quiz hosted by Katie and Helen whilst you make your Snuffle Mats!

🐾Handouts with our top 10 ideas of how to use your snuffle mat with your dogs.

Hi Everyone,

Just to let you all know that I have a full diary until 7th August and then I have decided to take a little career break.

I will not be working from 7th August for the next few months and will let you know when I am back with appointment availability.

I am sure you will agree, 2020 has been a difficult year for us all so far.
For me personally, it has reminded me of how important my family and friends are. Also having just lost my beautiful four legged side kick Reba it has been a painful reminder that our dogs are not with us for long enough....
So it's time to dedicate more time to my other 2 treasures, particularly as Jet is getting a bit old and rickety 🥰

I'm also looking forward to spending some quality time with my lovely hubby. I'm not quite sure how he feels about that yet as he has formed a firm attachment with the golf course recently so I may well be back working earlier than anticipated!! 🤣

Whilst I am away here are my firm, top favourites for all of your doggy needs:

🙂 Greg Great Paws Gang For your puppy, adult and rescue dog training needs, one to one training and classes now also back up and running! He is one super busy guy so get booked in soon!

🙂 Katie for the best enclosed, safe dog exercise and enrichment field hire facility in the North East, online training courses, one to one search training and much more. Definately check out the website!

🙂Jamie and Emma at the wonderful based at Preston Farm near Stockton. Fun swim sessions with your dogs with these experts in their field of work.

🙂Aimee who is based out of Swimpaws for your doggy haircuts, baths and nail clipping.

🙂 Nick for fantastic and fun doggy photo shoots.

🙂Natalie Twiggy’s Friends Pet Care for dog walking in the Darlington area. Lots of experience with Rescue dogs and highly recommend.

🙂Carl &caninecafe for all of your dogs treats, toys, harnesses, leads, collars and the best Iced latte for humans in Stockton! If you havent visited yet it's a must!

Take care everyone and see you soon xx

How do I find the right dog trainer?

Dog training is an unregulated industry. Meaning anyone can set up a dog training business. Pretty scary when you are looking at paying them for their expertise and they may not have any.

Part of my job role is picking up the pieces from the cowboy trainers.

👍Modern day dog training is backed up by Science and it works!
Understanding our dogs cognitive abilities, how they learn and process is important so that we can implement practical training that works. Knowing our dogs limitations in processing is also relevant too.

A good trainer will understand these processes, not bog you down with the science, though will help you understand coupled with showing you practically how to train.

🙂You will enjoy training and your dog will too.

👎Dinosaur dog trainers will tell you to check, pull, tell and force your dog to do things.. which is easy to advocate when you know of no other way to train to achieve results.

Often an unwanted display of your dogs behaviour will be addressed with a quick fix involving restricting or suppressing your dog in showing how they feel.
Not such a quick fix when your dog is miserable and now has you not being nice to them.... aswell as the existing problem made worse.

😪Your training will not be enjoyable and your dog will probably hate you.

❤Aim to give your dog the best life ❤

There are regulatory organisations that your good dog trainers will look to be a part of.
APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers)
IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers)
PPN (Pet Professional Network)
Look for these logos when researching trainers.

🤩I am very proud of one of my new clients for walking away from a dinosaur. He recognised that the training was not the route he wanted to take for his new puppy and that the methods were not working.

❤Food!!! Find a trainer who loves using it for dog training. If they dont... run a mile! ❤

🥰I am currently working part time so my appointment availability is limited. I do find it hard not being able to accommodate everyone who contacts me asking for support with their dogs

(And thankyou to puppy Nola who I had the pleasure in meeting today and for making us all say "Aaawwwww" ) 😍😍😍

Please give your dogs a day off today.. they will not thank you for a walk in this heat.

If you want to know how they feel put your fleecey jumper and a coat on and go for a walk barefoot...

🌞Have a chill out day, hide some treats around the house for them to have a snuffle and search instead.

🌞Make some dog friendly icecream using natural yoghurt and add in some meat, fruit or veg pieces for a cool, refreshing treat.

🌞Have some water fun by filling plastic containers with water and add some floating and sinking treats!

🌞Keep your dogs in the shade, access to fresh water, keep your dogs safe and cool.

Have a different kinda day!
