You’re going away. Your cat doesn’t have to.

Holidays, weekends away and overnight trips mean temporarily leaving home, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your cat needs to leave too.

With in-home cat care, your plans can change while your cat’s familiar world stays reassuringly the same.

They can continue:

🐈Watching the world from their usual window
🐈‍⬛ Eating in their familiar surroundings
🐈 Using their own litter trays

Yoshi certainly does! 😂 Apparently, an ordinary bowl of water just isn’t exciting enough for him.

Many cats are attracted to moving water, so a pet water fountain can be a great option, particularly for cats who don’t seem very interested in drinking from a bowl.

I think a water fountain might have to be Yoshi’s next purchase! 😹

🐾 CATTERY OR CARE AT HOME? Part 3

It’s not just about the amount of space…

Cats form strong connections with their territory. Their familiar scents, favourite places and predictable daily routine all help them feel safe and secure.

When a cat stays somewhere new, it isn’t simply a change of room. They may also need to adjust to:

🐈‍⬛ Unfamiliar scents and sounds
🐈 Different feeding and cleaning routines
🐈‍⬛ New sleeping and hiding places
🐈 Different people caring for them
🐈‍⬛ The presence of unfamiliar cats nearby

A well run cattery will work hard to make cats comfortable, and many cats settle perfectly well. However, others can find these changes unsettling, particularly cats who are nervous, older, strongly attached to their routine or cautious around unfamiliar people and animals.

With care at home, their surroundings remain exactly as they know them. Their favourite bed is still there. Their usual hiding place hasn’t moved. Their meals, playtime and litter care can follow their normal routine.

The only unfamiliar part is me and that’s why every Keys & Paws booking begins with a free Meet & Greet, allowing your cat to meet me in their own home before you go away. 💙

One of my favourite cat breeds has to be the magnificent Maine C**n! 🐈‍⬛🐈🫶🏻

They’re known for their impressive size, beautiful fluffy coats and wonderfully friendly personalities and just look at those fabulous ears and enormous paws! 🐾

But every breed and every wonderful moggy has something special about them. ✨

Here are a few of my favourite moments from my recent visits with this gorgeous boy, from curious head tilts and playtime to fuss, stretches and plenty of relaxation. 😻

One of the loveliest parts of caring for cats in their own homes is seeing them happy and comfortable in familiar surroundings. I also love capturing these little moments so their owners can see what they’ve been getting up to while they’re away. 📸💙

Honestly, Reggie is such a sweet boy. 🫶🏻

🐾 CATTERY OR CARE AT HOME? Part 2

Imagine being taken somewhere completely unfamiliar…

Before a cat even arrives at a cattery, there’s the carrier, the car journey and all the unfamiliar movement, sounds and smells along the way.

Then they arrive somewhere new, with different surroundings, different people, unfamiliar scents and potentially the sounds of other cats (or dogs) nearby.

Some confident cats cope perfectly well with this. For others, particularly nervous, older or very territorial cats, the journey and sudden change of environment can feel unsettling.

With care at home, there is:

🏡 No car journey
🏡 No unfamiliar territory
🏡 No new sights, sounds or smells to adjust to
🏡 No disruption to their familiar surroundings

Instead, your cat remains at home while I come to them, providing their usual meals, litter care, play, affection and companionship around the routine they already know.

You can enjoy your time away knowing your cat is being cared for where they feel most secure: at home. 💙

Apparently, lying down before falling asleep was far too much effort! 😂 One minute he was sitting there with his eyes closed, and the next the little paw went over his face. 🥹💙

He’s always taken his naps very seriously, even if he didn’t quite have the technique mastered yet!

Since June 2024, owned cats in England, including indoor cats, must be microchipped by the age of 20 weeks, with their keeper’s contact details registered and kept up to date.

A microchip can make all the difference if your cat becomes lost or is found injured, but it can only help reunite you if the registered details are correct.

Please take a moment to check:

🐱 Is your cat microchipped?
📞 Is your telephone number current?
🏡 Is your address up to date?

It’s a small job that could make an enormous difference. 💙
