Under the GOV.UK Pet Microchipping Guidelines, dogs in public spaces must legally wear a collar with an ID tag displaying the owner's name and address under The Control of Dogs Order 1992.
Legal Requirements for UK Dog Tags
• Required Information: The tag or collar must clearly show the owner's name and address (a house number/name and postcode are legally sufficient).
• Phone Number: While a telephone number is not strictly required by law, it is strongly recommended to add a mobile number so you can be contacted immediately if your dog is found.
• Microchipping vs. Tags: Microchipping is separately compulsory for dogs by 8 weeks of age, but a microchip does not replace the legal requirement for a visible collar and ID tag.
• Penalties: Failing to display a proper ID tag in a public place can lead to fines of up to £2,000–£5,000.
• Exemptions: Working dogs (such as guide dogs, packs of hounds, and specified sporting or livestock-tending dogs) are exempt while on duty.
