Lots of lovely 1-1 sessions over the past couple of weeks, and how lovely it’s been! 🐾

It’s been great to catch up with existing clients and welcoming new ones, all working towards their goals and building on the progress they’ve already made.

A little reminder that my November diary is already starting to fill up, so if you’d like to book a session, pop me a message! I have limited availability, so it’s worth getting in touch sooner rather than later. ✨

🐾 DOG BEHAVIOUR DECODED: Why do dogs kick their back legs?

You know that little ā€œkick, kick, kickā€ your dog does? Often after they’ve had a wee or poo? šŸ˜‚

There can actually be a few reasons behind it!

🐶 Scent marking

One of the most common reasons. Dogs have scent glands around their paws, and kicking can help spread their scent around the area. The visual scratching can also leave a message for other dogs: ā€œI’ve been here!ā€

🧠 Communication

It can be part of normal social communication between dogs and is often completely harmless.

😬 Stress or anxiety

Sometimes repetitive or exaggerated kicking can be linked to emotional arousal, stress or anxiety. Context is important, so look at what else your dog is doing and what’s happening around them.

āš ļø Pain or neurological issues

If the behaviour is sudden, excessive, unusual for your dog or happening outside of their normal toileting routine, it’s worth getting it checked by your vet. Changes in movement or coordination can sometimes be associated with pain or neurological problems.

As with so much dog behaviour, context is key! One behaviour can have several different meanings depending on the individual dog and what’s happening around them.

So if your dog does their usual post-poo boot-scoot, there’s probably no need to worry šŸ˜‚

But if something suddenly changes or feels out of character, don’t just assume it’s behavioural. Get it checked. 🐾

A few words from some lovely clients šŸ¤

There’s nothing quite like receiving a message from someone saying that they finally feel like they can make progress, that their dog feels more empowered, or simply that they’re grateful to have someone who gets it.

Behaviour support isn’t just about changing a dog’s behaviour…It’s about helping you understand why your dog is struggling, giving you practical tools that actually fit into real life, and helping you feel more confident along the way.

Sometimes, it’s also about being the person you can message when you’ve had a difficult day and just need someone who understands. 🐾

I’m so grateful to everyone who trusts me with their dogs and allows me to be part of their journey.

I don’t know who needs to hear this today, but… stop people pleasing. āœ‹

There will always be people who have different opinions on training, behaviour, welfare and what they believe is the ā€œrightā€ way to do things.

Some people will agree with your approach and others won’t. But don’t get so caught up in trying to please everyone that you lose sight of your own values, knowledge and the reasons you started in the first place.
Don’t say yes to things that don’t feel right because you’re scared of disappointing someone.

Don’t compromise your ethics to avoid difficult conversations and don’t feel like you have to justify every decision you make simply because someone else would do things differently.

Something I’ve grown in, both personally and in my business, is learning to value myself, my own choices and my own feelings.

Honestly… It hasn’t always been easy. When you’re used to putting everyone else first, setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable. Saying no can feel selfish. Standing firm in your approach can feel daunting when you know someone might disagree. But the more you do it, the more you realise that staying true to yourself is far more important than being liked by everyone.

You can be kind without being a people pleaser and you can respect someone’s opinion without changing your own.

One of my favourite things to watch is the bond between Olive and our dog. šŸ¤

I’m so proud of the relationship they’ve built, but I also know that it hasn’t happened by chance.

It’s been shaped by patience, supervision, teaching, boundaries and allowing them both the space to feel safe and comfortable around each other.

Olive is learning how to interact with a dog respectfully, and our dog is learning that being around her is a positive experience where his communication is listened to.

Because a beautiful relationship between a child and a dog isn’t about expecting the dog to tolerate everything a child does.

It’s about respect going both ways.

It’s about teaching children to recognise when a dog wants space, understanding canine body language, and never expecting a dog to put up with something they’re uncomfortable with.

And it’s about giving dogs the choice, support and trust they need to feel safe too.

The goal isn’t simply for children and dogs to coexist.
It’s to help them build a relationship rooted in trust, understanding and mutual respect. 🐾

Watching that relationship grow? One of the loveliest things.

A little reminder about supporting small businesses. šŸ¤

Behind every small business is a real person (or a very small team!) doing their best to keep things running.

We’re navigating rising costs, cancellations, quieter periods, unexpected expenses and all the uncertainty that comes with running a business, while juggling our own lives behind the scenes too.

So if you use a small business, a few little things can make a huge difference:

✨ Communication matters. If something changes, just let us know. We’re much more understanding when we know what’s going on.

✨ Please respect our time. Messages, admin, planning, travelling and preparation all take time, even if you don’t see it.

✨ Please don’t be afraid to ask questions, but understand that discounts aren’t always possible. Our prices reflect the costs of running the business, as well as the time, experience and care that goes into what we do.

✨ Policies and terms are there for a reason. They help protect both you and the business and allow us to be consistent and fair with everyone.

✨ Kindness goes a long way. A friendly message, recommendation, review, share or simple thank you costs nothing, but can mean an awful lot.

Most importantly, please remember that we are businesses too. We genuinely care about the people and animals we work with and want to be as flexible and understanding as we can. But we also need to make sure what we’re doing is sustainable for us.

None of us really know what the next few months will look like. Times are unpredictable, and small businesses are doing their best to weather that uncertainty while continuing to provide the services people rely on.

So thank you to everyone who chooses to support a small, local business. Every booking, recommendation, review, kind message and share really does make a difference. 🐾

Support small. Be kind. Communicate. And remember there’s a person behind the business. šŸ¤
