This beautiful Cavachon popped in to see our lovely cardiac vet, Dr. Young, for a routine check-up heart ultrasound and echocardiogram. She is currently managing Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), but with her medications on board and close monitoring, she is doing absolutely fantastic!
What is Mitral Valve Disease?
-MVD is the most common heart condition found in small, lovable breeds like Cavachons. It happens when the heart’s mitral valve wears down over time, preventing it from sealing properly. This causes a small backflow of blood, forcing the heart to work much harder to pump blood efficiently.
Signs to look out for at home:
-Because MVD is progressive, early detection is everything! Keep a close eye on your senior pups or at-risk breeds for these common warning signs⬇️
Persistent coughing:
-Especially at night or after waking up from a nap.
Breathing changes:
-Heavy panting, rapid breathing, or struggling for air.
Low energy:
-Slowing down on walks or showing less interest in playtime.
Resting respiratory rate:
-An increase in breaths per minute while sleeping soundly.
Fainting or collapse:
-In more advanced stages.
Regular heart scans allow Dr. Young to look directly inside her heart chambers, track any changes, and perfectly tailor those life-saving medications.
