Workshops are training opportunities especially for those that can’t commit to a course.
Each one is tailored to help with a particular area, but all are good for learning to listen around other dogs, but with plenty of space when needed.

Puppy social walks
These are helping pups to cope in world, controlled social with other pups (not a free for all), learning skills such as walking on the lead and listening in the real world.
Plenty of time with experienced, qualified trainer to answer questions, along with some training.
Distance appropriate to age (young pups get a rest in the middle).
Next walk Saturday 15th
9.30am pups 18 weeks to 12 months
10.45am pups up to 18 weeks

This week Osha has had more social adventures, which include a trip to vets for a weigh in (and of course a cuddle), a walk in the woods with her big ‘sister’ and practicing walking nicely on the lead. We have also been practicing skills at home and out and about.
Training with a puppy is often making the most of an opportunity such as when they chase a bird practise a recall (we nailed it), watching a mobility scooter go by or a big noisy trailer. The more they see, and we make it nice or fun in the early days the better.
The puppy social walks are great for been able to deal with what we see in real time. Having a qualified and experienced trainer with you helping you in the moment means you then have the skills to help when you ‘meet’ dramas on your own.
The next walks are Saturday 4th July.

Calmness and self control workshop
Friday 19th 6.30pm
Does your dog struggle to control themselves?
Do they get over aroused or excited?
This workshop looks at helping our dogs to learn to calm down, listen when excited, and develop a level of self control.

Socialisation of a puppy
People often think that socialisation is about puppy play time and running around with other puppies.
However we should view socialisation as learning to act appropriately in different environments and cope with situations. This may include playing with pups/older dogs, but should also include walking with/past other dogs and not pouncing on them assuming it’s ’game on’.
The same with people, everyone wants to say hello to a cute puppy, but is we are not careful at this stage puppy grows up assuming they ‘should’ greet every human that they come across.
We should also be aware that pups go through stages of confidence and not so sure the same as young humans, so we should help them through the stress times to maintain confidence and resilience.
Ideas include: lots of environments, noises, places. Rides in the car. Trips to vets (just to say hello). Visits to cafes/pubs. Short walks to take in the sights and sounds. And of course some interactions with friendly humans n dogs.
Controlled social walks with other pups are an ideal way to help, with an experienced n qualified trainer on hand to help with any hiccups.

There are lots of things that we can do with our pups before they are fully vaccinated to aid them cope with the world.
We want everything to be as positive as possible, although there is scientific evidence that small, low levels of stress help to build resilience to bounce back. We do need to be careful with this, and if you’re at all unsure reach out for guidance.
Some ideas:
Little trips in the car
If pup is a suitable size carry them on a ‘walk’
For the slightly bigger pup, drive somewhere that you can then have them sit on your lap and watch the world.
Make trips to the vet positive, with food and fuss. Don’t make the vaccinations the last time that you take them for a year. Pop in let the reception and nurses fuss them. Pop them in the scales. Sit and watch for a few minutes and then go. Make it a nice place not a drama. Some effort now will pay if/when they need to go for help.
Let people say hello.
Watch traffic
Be ‘normal’ at home not quiet. Things like hovers, drills and lawnmowers can be introduced at a safe distance.
Of course we can also start with some training from day one we should be working on toilet training, sleep routines, the ‘rules’ of the house, as well as basics like sit (more on training soon)
Remember effort now sets you on the right track for the rest of your and pups lives together 🙂🐾

We have a new ‘baby’…..Osha. Follow us on our journey 🙂
Introducing a new member of the family is exciting, but should be handled with care. We don’t want early introductions to cause long term issues. Some key points to think about:
* keep it short and positive
* watch body language of everyone, and give space where needed
*use a stair gate or pen to help if needed
* food & toys can be good, but take care not to make either party possessive
* don’t rush things, better to be slow (days/weeks) & be positive than rush and it go wrong
* it’s an adjustment for all (2 legs and 4)
Biggest point…,keep it positive!
