First day back 🐾💙 and a brand new Beginners group starting their K9 Wild journey.

Today was about keeping things simple.

Building focus and engagement, introducing our markers and helping our dogs start to understand which behaviours work.

For me, training isn’t about stopping your dog getting it wrong. It’s about giving them the opportunity to work things out and making sure we recognise and reward when they get it right.

There was lots for these dogs to take in today — new dogs, new people and a new environment — and they did brilliantly.

Now we start building on it.

🐾 K9 Wild Social Walk & Social Search 💙

Today we held our annual Social Walk and Social Search and, for me, days like today are about so much more than just getting together.

They’re about giving K9 Wild clients the opportunity to put their training into practice in the real world, knowing they’re surrounded by people who understand.

Because we’ve all been there.

The walk where things don’t quite go to plan.
The distraction you weren’t expecting.
The moment your dog struggles.
Or simply wondering whether you’re doing the right thing.

Support comes in all shapes and sizes. 💙

Our Social Walk gives everyone the opportunity to work around other dogs and people, use distance when they need it, practise engagement and put all those little pieces of training together.

And then there’s our Social Search. 🐾👃

A completely different opportunity for our dogs.

To use their noses, search, problem solve and work independently while still building that relationship with the person at the other end of the lead.

For some dogs, searching gives them an outlet.

For others, it builds confidence.

And for some, it gives them something they absolutely love doing.

What I loved most about today was watching everyone support one another.

Giving another dog a little more space without being asked.

Celebrating someone else’s win.

Understanding that every dog there is on their own journey and that success won’t look the same for everyone.

Today wasn’t about having perfectly behaved dogs.

It was about understanding the dog in front of you, using the tools you’ve built through your training and making good decisions for your individual dog.

That’s what K9 Wild is about.

Training that you can take out into the real world, a community that understands, and support wherever you are on your journey. 💙🐾

🐾 Izzy 💙

Izzy is a 3-year-old rescue who came to me with extreme anxiety around noises and movement and had developed habitual behaviours, including chasing shadows.

Her mum and dad have worked really hard building her confidence — and it shows. 💙

But as our dogs grow in confidence, sometimes new little habits start to creep in.

That was the reason for today’s training session.

Listening wasn’t quite as good as it once was, a few things had slipped and ball play had become more about throwing the ball than using it to reinforce the behaviours we wanted.

So we went back to basics — engagement, tolerance, understanding and making working with us worthwhile.

Something I want you to think about…

Do you reward what you WANT to see more of?

Or does your dog get more from you when they don’t do what you ask?

They run off… you become exciting.
They ignore you… the treats come out.
They disengage… suddenly the ball appears.

Without realising it, we can reinforce the very behaviour we’re trying to change.

Food, toys, search and play are brilliant rewards — but use them with purpose.

Catch the good choices.
Mark them.
Reward them.
Build on them.

Izzy has come such a long way. Now we’re building on that confidence while making sure those little habits don’t become bigger ones.

🐾 Meet Izzy 💙

Izzy is a 3-year-old rescue who came to me with extreme anxiety, struggling with noises and movement and developing habitual behaviours such as chasing shadows.

Her mum and dad have worked incredibly hard with her. They’ve built her confidence, helped her understand the world around her and the difference in her really shows.

But as your dog grows in confidence, your training needs to grow with them.

And that was really the reason for today’s session.

Izzy is more confident now. She’s happier to explore and make her own choices — all things we wanted to see.

But with that can come little habits.

Maybe they don’t listen quite as well as they once did.

Maybe we’ve let a few things slip because they’re doing so well.

Maybe something that started as a bit of fun has become more important to the dog than we realised.

It happens.

So sometimes we just need to look at what we’re doing and make a few changes.

🎾 Ball play was one of those areas today.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with throwing a ball and having fun with your dog — but if we pick up the ball and just throw it, throw it again, and again, what is the dog actually learning?

The ball has value.

Use that value.

Ask for a little engagement.
Wait for a behaviour you want.
Mark it.
Then throw the ball.

You’re still playing and having fun, but now you’re also building understanding.

And this is something I want people to think about in everyday training…

Do I reward what I want to see more of?

Or does what my dog doesn’t do sometimes create something positive from me?

Your dog gets into the position you want — do you notice it and reward it?

Or do they run off and suddenly your hand goes into your treat pouch, you start calling them and producing something really exciting to get them back?

From your dog’s point of view…

Which behaviour made you produce the good stuff?

Dogs are clever. They learn patterns and they adapt to what works for them.

So see the behaviour and wonder why.

Instead of “she isn’t listening”, think:

What happened before it?

What did I do afterwards?

And what might my dog have learnt from that?

This is why training doesn’t have to be formal.

It’s happening when you put the lead on.

When you open the door.

When your dog looks back at you on a walk.

When you pick up the ball.

When they choose to stay with you rather than disappear off.

Those little everyday moments are where habits are built.

And if little habits start creeping in, it doesn’t mean everything has gone wrong.

Go back. Simplify it. Make it fun. Help your dog understand the rules again.

That was a big part of today’s work with Izzy — bringing the focus back to engagement, building tolerance and making sure the things she loves are helping us reinforce the behaviours we actually want.

Training changes as our dogs change.

Don’t rush it.

Give them time to understand and remember to notice those little behaviours you want to see more of.

Because those little moments eventually become habits too. 💙

🐾 International Dog Day 💙

My dogs haven’t just been part of my life — they’ve shaped who I am today.

They’ve taught me patience, made me laugh, challenged me, grounded me and been beside me through so many different chapters of my life.

Each one has left something behind and changed me in their own way.

I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the dogs I’ve been lucky enough to share my life with.

Today is simply about celebrating them — the ones beside me now and the ones who will always be part of my story.

Past and present, thank you. 💙🐾

And to all the dogs who shape our lives in ways they’ll never know. 💙🐾
