What does it mean to have a response - a behaviour - under RELIABLE ‘stimulus control’?

What does that twaddle
mean?

Basically, when the animal gets a specific signal, it will perform a specific behaviour.

Basic right?

But it’s the ‘RELIABLE’ part I want you to focus on.

Will the dog respond the same way to the same signal regardless of what’s going on?

Will it respond with speed and understanding when it is highly distracted, especially where it has never been repeatedly trained in that situation before?

If it will - that’s training dogs!

But it can never be considered FINISHED - because the world will give you infinite situations, and never the same one twice!

Video shows an example of that process as it was being tested under an increasingly distracting situation.

Remember - only the signal should cause the response. And the response should happen!

Instead of dog trainers teaching dog owners the limited value of eye contact for a slice of sausage,

They would do far better to spend time teaching them the immense value of this - for nothing but the sake of it.

Free to go wherever and do whatever he likes.

Without this as a foundation, you’re building castles on sand.
