Thursday morning started off lovely, out early with the gang before work but on the short walk something happened.
Enzo put his head in the hedgerow and came out and shook it. Within 5 minutes he started to act odd, he sat down whining and then lay down, his eyes looked glazed over. We went straight to the vets as something had clearly happened.
By the time we got to the vets his muzzle had started to swell and he was yelping when his neck or face was touched.
We don’t know what got him, hopefully it was just a severe reaction to an insect bite or sting but there is the possibility of it being a snake bite.
He received a steroid jab at the vets and was sent home under strict instruction of 10 days rest to ensure any toxin breaks down without causing internal damage.
This morning his face is looking a little better and he seems to be a bit more himself but we have to still be careful for the next week with only 10 minute onlead walks for the boy.
I’m grateful he showed me something was wrong before any physical swelling was visible as I was literally going to be putting the dogs back in the house, then heading off to work straight away, so he would have been left alone for a few hours with a potentially restricted airway.
So my reason for sharing this is to remind everyone to be present when walking dogs, make sure you’re aware of what they are doing. Things happen that are out of our control, I could have easily missed Enzo shaking his head after putting it in the hedgerow and might have thought him acting odd just warranted me to monitor him for a bit, as I wouldn’t have had any idea what was causing it.
While Enzo (and myself) might seem very unlucky, we are lucky that we got to the vets promptly and could receive the appropriate treatment and advice.
Lastly thank you all for your understanding this week through the heat. Another week of having to make last minute adjustments because the forecast is constantly changing. The drinks and ice lolly’s were very welcome!
Another few days and we should be back to normality 🤞🏼
