From helicopters to tanks… not your average Scent Detection session! 🚁

Friday saw nine teams and eleven dogs joining me at the paintball park in Kidderminster, with some fantastic search areas and plenty of challenges for both dogs and handlers.

This session we tackled larger search areas, knowing when to move on, when to call an area clear and how much support our dogs actually need.

With environmental distractions, distractors and changes in odour strength, there was lots to work through, particularly around independent searching, indications and handler decisions.

What I always find interesting is how differently dogs approach the same environment. Some needed a bit more motivation, others confidence, clarity or support from their handlers. It’s not about making every dog work the same way, but adapting the training to suit the dog in front of us.

And with helicopters, tanks and all sorts of other things to search, we weren’t short of options! 😂

Our dog’s were showing changes in behaviour, so why aren’t we seeing an indication?

Monday’s scent detection session was all about exploring reduced quantities of the dogs target odour. Some dogs showed familiar changes in behaviour but didn’t always commit to their “trained” indication.

It gave us something interesting to investigate & understand — how they were responding to an odour picture that wasn’t quite what they were used to?

I planned line-ups to observe each dog’s response and worked with variations in odour quantity. That gave us information & data to take into our search planning, rather than simply expecting the dogs to indicate because we knew the target was there.

Sometimes the answer may not be to ask more of the dog, but to look at what we’ve prepared them for and adapt the training accordingly. The dogs blew us away in their searches!

I haven’t done Paul Bunker’s All Clear Protocol workshop before, and that’s exactly why I’m looking forward to this one!

After conversations with other handlers and peers, it’s raised some interesting questions for me around what we think we know about calling an area clear — and what there might still be to learn and with Paul’s years of experience, I’m really interested to hear his perspective.

I’m also looking forward to the conversations that come from getting a group of curious handlers and trainers together.

Question - In a detection search, what’s the dog’s job… and what’s ours?

I’ve seen this come up a lot during scent detection sessions.

I’ll often see dogs who have become used to their handlers stepping in — pointing something out, moving them towards an area or helping them find the answer and handlers who just aren’t sure what to do for the best.

It’s always done with the best intentions. But what happens when we remove that help or we just don’t know how to help?

Some dogs simply looked back at their handler as if to say, “Well… what now?”

When this happens I believe we need to go back to building motivation to search and making the roles clearer.

Our job shouldn’t be to necessarily give our dogs the answer. I believe we can assist, task the dog into an area, support the search and make changes to the training picture when needed — but we still need to give our dogs the space & opportunity to use their nose and work things out.

On our last training day with Mark Doggett, Zeus gave us a lovely example of this. He had great motivation to search & was quite methodical while Anita was able to task him back into areas he’d missed without simply showing him where to find the hide. It look quite relaxed and flowing.

That’s the balance I’m interested in helping teams gain.

When do we help?
When do we task?
And when do we just need to get out of the dog’s way?

And sometimes we need to be honest enough to say - we’re not there yet but let’s keep training.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for our dogs is step back and give them the opportunity to solve the problem themselves. We become less of a director and more of a teammate.

Fancy taking your detection training somewhere a little different?

I’m back at the Paintball Park in Kidderminster on Friday 16th October, with two sessions to choose from: ⏰ 10am & 1pm

This is such a great environment for developing searches — lots of different areas, surfaces and environmental distractions to work around.

These sessions are for dogs already on odour, and I will adapt the searches to the dog and handler team in front of me.

🐾 £30 per team, per session

Two sessions also gives us the opportunity to build on what we learn during the morning and change the picture again in the afternoon. 👀

You don’t always need a participating dog to learn.

On Sunday 11th October, i’m welcoming Corrine Wrend to Warwickshire for a full-day workshop exploring the power of rewards.

Not all rewards are created equal — and understanding what genuinely motivates our individual dog can change how we approach our training.

Corrine will be explaining how rewards can be used effectively to help build stronger behaviours and clearer communication creating better bonds and partnerships.

Handler places are now full. Spectator spaces are still available – just £35

Spectating gives you the chance to watch different dogs and handlers work, listen to Corrine’s observations and explanations, and take that learning away to think about with our own dog’s.

Sometimes taking the pressure off handling means you actually get to watch more, listen more and notice more.

🙏This one means rather a lot.

If you know me well you’ll know I’m much more comfortable lurking at the back, talking about dogs and training than I am talking about myself, but receiving this reference from Wesley genuinely meant a lot to me.

I’ve spent years learning, questioning, travelling, training my own dogs and investing in my knowledge probably creating even more questions along the way, mostly about my sanity about why I left the corporate world for the dog world 😅

This is only a small snippet but the bit that resonates with me is the importance of being able to transfer that learning to the person in front of me at the other end of the line.

Because knowing something and being able to help someone else understand it are two very different skills!

Thank you Wesley for the kind words, the training, the challenges and the continued learning and support.

Different dogs. Different odours. Different training goals.

Yesterday i welcomed Mark Doggett from Detection Training UK for a full day of scent detection training.

Dogs were working clove, Kong and gun oil, while handlers focused on different parts of their training — search patterns, start of searches, reading their dogs, indications at distance and knowing when they could confidently call an area clear.

And there were some cracking searches along the way. 🙌

But one thing kept coming back to me throughout the day…

Foundations matter.

Not just scent detection foundations, but good dog training generally!
Understanding reinforcement, communicating clearly, observing behaviour and knowing what you’re actually trying to train all influence what happens when we ask our dogs to search.

Because sometimes improving the search isn’t actually about doing more searching.

A huge thank you to Mark for sharing his knowledge and to everyone who came along and got stuck in with their dogs.

Always learning. Always observing.

Our dogs listen to us… but are we listening to them?

Tuesday’s Mantrailing gave us plenty to think about.

We worked on scent pools and human ID’s, amongst alleyways, road crossings and plenty of distractions.

The scent pools were particularly interesting. Some dogs hunted for their trail layer, some showed us the edges of the pool, while others worked through it and found the direction the trail continued.

But one of my biggest takeaways wasn’t actually about scent.

We saw just how easily a handler questioning a decision can make a dog question themselves — even when the dog was right.

Our dogs are constantly giving us information. Through their movement, intensity, hesitation, choices and changes in behaviour.

Mantrailing isn’t just about finding someone at the end for me, it’s learning to observe the dog in front of us, understand what they’re telling us and knowing when to trust them and let them work.

Learning should always be at both ends of the line. 🐾 Canine Synergy
