Long lines don’t have to mean tangled leads and chaotic walks.

Preparing for Clipping Starts Before You Pick Up the Clippers

As the days get shorter, clipping season is just around the corner. But before you even switch your clippers on, a little preparation can make all the difference.

A clean horse is one of the biggest secrets to a great clip. Dirt, grease and mud will quickly blunt your blades, making clipping harder and reducing the quality of the finish.

Before you start, I always like to make sure I have everything ready:

✔ A clean horse, paying particular attention to any greasy areas.
✔ A bit of coat oil on the coat helps your blades
✔ Clippers cleaned and oiled.
✔ Sharp blades fitted.
✔ Spare blades ready if needed.
✔ Clipper oil and a small brush close by.
✔ A safe, well lit area where both you and your horse can relax.

Taking a few extra minutes to prepare can save a lot of time later and will help your blades last longer too.

If your horse is particularly dirty, this is where a Teasle Hot Wash is ideal. It lifts grease and dirt without the need for a full bath, leaving the coat clean and ready for clipping.

Every horse is different, and every owner has their own routine, but one thing is certain. Good preparation always leads to a better result.
