The perfect group intro: Why I didn’t let Henry sniff right away! 🤫🐾
I never let pups rush up and sniff face-to-face straight away, it’s the quickest way to cause over-excitement or tension! 🙅🏼♀️
Since "Henry the Rocket" 🚀 usually walks solo, introducing him to a new buddy took extra care. My partner, Darren, came along so we had a safe, 1-to-1 human-to-pup ratio.
Here’s how we did it:
Neutral Territory & Space 🚗🧭
We met at Penllergaer Woods in separate vehicles so everyone started calm. 🌲 For the first 15 minutes, Darren walked with Chip while I walked with Henry. Walking parallel in the same direction gave Henry plenty of space to get used to Chip's scent without any added pressure.
Letting Henry Relax 🐕🦺
Once Henry relaxed, my secret weapon, Chip, went off-lead to do his thing. 😌 Chip is so laid-back and well-socialized that he is completely unfazed by other dogs. Seeing Chip calmly ignore him, helped Henry stay completely level-headed and calm. It wasn't about chaotic playing. It was just about showing him that being around another dog can be a peaceful, positive experience.
The Confidence Boost! 💦🌲
Seeing Chip explore gave Henry the sweetest confidence rub-off! 😍 Within 20 minutes, Henry was investigating the woods, splashing in the water (an absolute first!), and his recall was the best it's ever been! 🙌🏼
As an excitable, fast-paced intact male, Henry doesn't show any bad signs, dominance, or triggers at all! He just has big, happy energy! ⚡️🤪 But because he's so enthusiastic, other dogs usually lack the patience for him, meaning we normally just have to keep moving.
This walk was an absolute first for him, and now he has a new BFF in Chip! 🥹🫶🏼 They clicked so naturally and finished their walk muddy, extra tired, and completely content! 🥰
His lovely Mum was absolutely thrilled because Henry always wants to make friends, but it's just usually not reciprocated. 🥺
We couldn't be any happier and I'm so proud of them both! 🧡
Look out for more of Henry & Chip’s adventures! 🌲🐾☀️💦
