Pet bereavement is always an extremely sad period in people’s lives, but for the elderly it may be a particularly profound emotional loss. Pets provide purpose, unconditional love, companionship and a connection to society, and at a life stage when individuals may feel a general sense of redundancy in life, the loss of a pet can be particularly lonely experience, extending the grieving and healing processes, as individuals retreat into a void of isolation and perceived loss of hope for the future. There are many wonderful help and support organisations available with an impartial, empathetic ear, where individuals are struggling alone. Suggestions of new pets at this time is often not a good option, but where we can, this is the time to offer conversation, company, a cuppa, food to share, pet memories, family pet cuddles, external support where necessary, and a hand to hold ❤️
