On Sunday 20th September, an incredible group of Swansea Community Farm champions will be lacing up their trainers to take on the Swansea 10K – all to raise vital funds for our much-loved community farm.

This year our team will be led by volunteer Victor who is an all around legend. He will be joined by Cerys, Kate and Rhiannon who he will, no doubt, leave in the dust because of his speedy pace. No doubt he will lead them to Victor-y!

If you've met Vic, you'll know what a legend he is, how much joy he brings, how hard he works and how much he loves the farm. Please support him if you can!

Date for your diary:
Our next great fundraising quiz night is going to be on the 10th of October. Our last one was so much fun and so popular that we are going to move to a bigger venue thanks to our friends who will be lending us Sketty Scout Hall (in the grounds of St Paul's in Sketty https://maps.app.goo.gl/p4pgJhrhme4pqxM38 ) to accommodate even more of you lovely lot. This event is run by volunteers to raise money so is even more special and deserving of you support, plus there will be a licensed bar and snacks!

Here are the photos you've been waiting for, Kate covered in mud rather than animal poo after competing in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. She even ended up with a bog beard!

Not one to waste an opportunity, on the way back she picked up some new turkeys who have been generously paid for by Tonia Antoniazzi MP and Cockett Ward councillor Mike Durke. The turkeys have been named in their honour, so please welcome Durkie, Tonia and Drummer the turkeys!

Make a Difference Monday:
One of our favourite things about being sustainable is discovering how much more we can achieve when we work together with our local community, in this case the team from Penllergare Valley Woods.

We provide fresh manure from the farm to help put nutrients back into the land.
In return, we receive windfall apples that would otherwise go to waste...... and our pigs absolutely love them!

A fab example of a local circular partnership: what might be waste for one place can be a valuable resource for another.

It doesn’t stop there. Both the farm and Penllergare Valley Woods welcome volunteers, giving people the chance to get involved, learn new skills, gets hands on in caring for the environment to make a real differences in our local area.

Small collaborations. Big impact.

That’s what Make a Difference Monday is all about — supporting each other, reducing waste and finding ways to help each other thrive.

Fundraising: Our ever so slightly bonkers CEO will be taking on an unusual challenge this Sunday to help raise money for the Farm by snorkeling 110 m through a bog at the World Bog Snorkeling Championships! If you'd like to support her, here is the link https://localgiving.org/fundraising/gibbsautumnchallenges

We can't wait to see the photos and for her to get her hands dirty again!

Our amazing goatbusters on a mission to clear scrub and invasives naturally to improve spaces for people and nature and this time they have fantastic views over the Swansea Valley. Thank you to Swansea Council abd the Local Nature Partnership for their support with this innovative and environmentally friendly approach to scrub control.

Make a Difference Monday: So many volunteers, over the years have told us how the farm has saved them at the point in their life they needed something. By finding community and a space where you can feel welcomed, accepted, not judged and useful many people have been on incredible journeys back to work, education and better relationships with their families. This quote from a regular farm user sums it up beautifully

Make a Difference Monday:
E has been volunteering at the farm for around 2 years during his holidays and recently told new volunteers how amazing it has been for his university applications and interviews. After a previous volunteer placement had not been a great experience for E he was nervous about coming to the farm but soon settled in and told us that he was so happy he gave the farm a chance as it has been amazing. He had told us that he has learnt so much and really enjoys the activities he does here and working with other volunteers and looking after our animals.

“It was really great to be able to talk about the hands on experience I have had at the farm during my interview for uni. I got to tell to them about giving medication, ear tagging, sheep turning and all the health checks we do on all the animals. Being here has really helped my confidence too”

Staff say “ It’s a joy to have E here, he is always keen to learn, get involved and has such a great big smile it infectious!”

Make a Difference Monday:

Did you know our community is made up of people struggling with their mental health, effects of poverty, social isolation and/or disabilities? At the farm they find purpose, friendship and join a non judgmental community that has life transforming effects.

Here is a quote from a volunteer that perfectly sums up how what she found here was exactly what she needed to feel good about herself again.
