A post for the “I haven’t been to Plantasia in years” crew!

People often visit for the fascinating animals and beautiful tropical plants. Understandably. But, our exhibition all about Welsh-born Naturalist and Explorer, Alfred Russel Wallace, cannot be missed!

Next time you step into our indoor rainforest, travel back in time and uncover the extraordinary story of Alfred Russel Wallace. From his Welsh roots to his adventures in faraway lands, discover how his pioneering work helped shape one of the most important scientific theories in history.

Post ar gyfer y rhai sy’n dweud “Dydw i ddim wedi bod i Plantasia ers blynyddoedd”!

Mae pobl yn aml yn dod i weld yr anifeiliaid ddiddorol a’r planhigion trofannol hardd. Ac yn gwbl ddealladwy hefyd. Ond, ni ddylech fethu ein harddangosfa sy’n canolbwyntio ar y naturiaethwr a’r fforiwr a aned yng Nghymru, Alfred Russel Wallace!

Tro nesaf y byddwch yn galw heibio, ewch yn ôl mewn amser a darganfod stori ryfeddol Alfred Russel Wallace. O’i wreiddiau Cymreig i’w anturiaethau mewn tiroedd pell, darganfyddwch sut y bu i’w waith arloesol helpu i lunio un o’r damcaniaethau gwyddonol pwysicaf mewn hanes.

And then others are very easy to spot, like Bumblebee here!

Having said that, these guys like to play hide and seek too. You can admire our Poison dart frogs and our Fired-bellied toads in our Vital Venoms and Practical Poisons room, as well as a few other exciting species.

The Vital Venoms and Practical Poisons room invites you to meet, and learn about, nature’s most misunderstood species. Get up close to creatures often feared, and discover the remarkable science, survival and ingenuity behind their natural defences.

Ac yna mae eraill yn hawdd iawn i’w gweld, fel y Bumblebee yma!

Wedi dweud hynny, mae’r dynion hyn yn hoffi chwarae cuddio hefyd. Gallwch edmygu ein brogaod dartiau gwenwynig a’n llyffantod bol-dan yn ein hystafell Gwenwynau Hanfodol a Gwenwynau Ymarferol, yn ogystal ag ychydig o rywogaethau cyffrous eraill.

Mae’r ystafell Gwenwynau Hanfodol a Gwenwynau Ymarferol yn eich gwahodd i gwrdd â, a dysgu am, rywogaethau mwyaf camddeallus natur. Dewch yn agos at greaduriaid sy’n aml yn cael eu hofni, a darganfyddwch y wyddoniaeth, y goroesiad a’r dyfeisgarwch rhyfeddol y tu ôl i’w hamddiffynfeydd naturiol.

Well well, turns out some of you are excellent detectives 🕵️‍♂️💚👏

Competition is now closed for this week. That was fun though. Fancy another one next week?! 🤔

Ok, fine! We admit it. Some of our animals play hard to get and are VERY difficult to find in their enclosures. We’re really happy about that though, it means they’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to do for survival. We also think hunting for them is half of the fun of meeting them. But we’re Zookeepers, so we’re weird and into that kind of thing.

So from now on, Fridays will be “Fun Fridays” (working title 😬). This week, if you find the frog in the photo and message us to show us, you’ll get a FREE visit to Plantasia for you and your family.

(Bigger prize for anyone who can come up with a better name for this concept than “Fun Fridays” 😅)

Iawn, iawn! Rydyn ni’n cyfaddef hynny. Mae rhai o’n hanifeiliaid yn anodd eu canfod ac yn wirioneddol anodd dod o hyd iddyn nhw yn eu llociau. Rydyn ni’n hapus iawn am hynny, serch hynny; mae’n golygu eu bod nhw’n gwneud yn union beth maen nhw i fod i’w wneud er mwyn goroesi. Rydyn ni hefyd yn credu bod chwilio amdanyn nhw yn rhan o’r hwyl o ddod i’w gweld. Ond ceidwaid sw ydyn ni, felly rydyn ni’n ecsentrig ac yn hoffi’r math yna o beth.

Felly o hyn ymlaen, bydd dyddiau Gwener yn ddyddiau “Fun Fridays” (teitl dros dro 😬). Yr wythnos hon, os dewch chi o hyd i’r broga yn y llun ac anfon neges atom i’w ddangos i ni, cewch ymweliad AM DDIM â Plantasia i chi a’ch teulu.

Bydd gwobr fwy ar gael i rywun sy’n gallu meddwl am enw gwell ar gyfer y syniad hwn na “Fun Fridays” 😅 Yn enwedig os gallwch chi feddwl am enw gwell yn Gymraeg

Plantasia chocolate anyone?! 🍫

The edible properties of cacao beans were discovered over 2,000 years ago by the people of Central America living deep in the tropical rainforests. The cocoa fruit is the most valuable part of the plant because it provides the cacao used as the basis for chocolate production. And, as you can see here, our cocoa tree is thriving thanks to our clever gardeners Alan and June!

📍If you visit Plantasia Tropical Zoo from now on you’ll be able to see our magnificent cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) in all its glory via a new path. Nestled between the Turaco enclosure and snake interactive.

Darganfuwyd priodweddau bwytadwy ffa cacao dros 2,000 o flynyddoedd yn ôl gan bobl Canolbarth America oedd yn byw yng nghanol y coedwigoedd glaw trofannol. Ffrwyth y goeden goco yw rhan fwyaf gwerthfawr y planhigyn, gan ei fod yn darparu'r cacao a ddefnyddir fel sail ar gyfer cynhyrchu siocled. Ac, fel y gallwch ei weld yma, mae ein coeden goco yn ffynnu!

📍Os byddwch yn ymweld â Plantasia Tropical Zoo o hyn ymlaen, byddwch yn gallu gweld ein coeden goco odidog (Theobroma cacao) yn ei holl ogoniant drwy lwybr newydd. Mae wedi'i lleoli rhwng lloc y tyrcos (turacos) a'r gem ryngweithiol gyda nadroedd.

We need everyone to stop what they’re doing immediately and look at this baby snail on top of a big snail.

Thank you.

🐌

If you’re still here though, here’s a little fun fact for you. Giant African land snails are hermaphroditic, with both male and female organs, meaning a single snail can lay up to 1,200 eggs a year. So it’s actually a wonder Speedy here is only giving just one baby a piggyback, and not ten.

Mae angen i bawb roi'r gorau i'r hyn maen nhw'n ei wneud ac edrych ar y malwen fach hon ar ben y falwen fawr.

Diolch.

🐌

Os ydych chi'n dal yma, dyma ffaith fach ddiddorol i chi. Mae malwod tir Affricanaidd anferth yn hermaphroditig – hynny yw, mae ganddyn nhw organau gwrywaidd a benywaidd – sy'n golygu y gall un falwen ddodwy hyd at 1,200 o wyau y flwyddyn. Felly, mae'n rhyfedd mewn gwirionedd bod Speedy yma yn cario un malwen fach yn unig ar ei gefn.
