Ernie and Lopez here at BGT HQ both have white.

Every now and then a litter of pure black Labradors arrives with one puppy wearing a small white patch on its chest, like a tiny medallion. Many people think it is a flaw. It is actually a whisper from history. 🐾

The Labrador descends from the St. John's water dog of Newfoundland, a hardy black dog that often carried white markings on the chest, chin, feet, and muzzle, a sort of faded tuxedo. As the modern breed was refined through the 1800s, breeders selected toward solid coats, but the old genes never fully disappeared. That occasional white chest spot is a living echo of the seafaring ancestor that started it all.

So while the show ring may frown on it, that little splash of white is really a signature from the past. 🌊

A reminder that today's sleek black Lab is only a few generations removed from a working dog on the cold Newfoundland coast.

Eye Contact: A Sign of Connection, Not a Trick

One of the biggest differences between a trained behaviour and a genuine relationship is eye contact.

Many dogs can be taught to look at their handler. Hold up a treat, say a cue, and they'll lock onto your face. That's not difficult to train.

But the eye contact that really matters isn't the kind that's bought with food.

It's the glance your dog gives you when they're unsure and checking in.

It's the look they give before making a decision.

It's the moment they seek you out in a distracting environment because you've become relevant, trustworthy, and worth paying attention to.

That sort of eye contact comes from a relationship.

It comes from consistent leadership, clear communication, shared experiences, and a dog learning that being connected to you is valuable in its own right.

When handlers focus only on teaching "watch me", they often miss the bigger picture. A dog can perform a perfect stare on cue and still have very little engagement outside of that exercise.

I'd much rather see a dog that chooses to check in naturally than one that has been conditioned to look at me every time I wave a biscuit.

Never forget that the goal is a dog that wants to work with you, not a dog that's simply waiting to be paid to work for you.

Because true connection can't be trained with a command.

It's built through a relationship with your dog.

The strongest partnership isn't measured by how long your dog can stare at you. It's measured by how often they choose to look your way when they don't have to.
