Blue-Green Algae

Allowing your dog to play in the water when the weather is hot is a great way to keep them cool, however the hot sunny weather of last week means that blue-green algae has bloomed.

Blue-green algae isn't an algae but a group of bacteria called cyanobacteria. The bacteria group together in clumps giving the appearance of algae, which is where their name came from.

Blue-green algae is most common in non-flowing fresh water such as ponds, lakes and rivers. Some types of the algae contain toxins that are highly poisonous and can be fatal to pets.

Dogs are at risk from the algae if they swim in affected water and when they ingest the water. The toxins in the algae stop the liver from functioning, and can cause long term health issues.

If you think that your dog may have been exposed to blue-green algae contact your vet straight away.
