๐Ÿ“ข Understanding the Difference Between Ethical Breeding and Backyard/Irresponsible Breeding

While not every breeder will do things exactly the same way, there are certain standards that responsible breeders strive to uphold. Ethical breeding is about far more than producing kittens โ€” it's about preserving and improving the breed, protecting the health and welfare of every cat, and taking lifelong responsibility for the animals produced..................

โœ… Ethical Breeding

โœ” Kittens leave fully vaccinated, helping to protect them against common infectious diseases.

โœ” Regular FIV and FeLV testing of breeding cats.

โœ” All kittens are microchipped before leaving for their new homes.

โœ” Kittens are neutered/spayed prior to rehoming (where appropriate), helping to reduce accidental litters and irresponsible breeding.

โœ” DNA and genetic health testing is carried out on breeding cats to reduce the risk of inherited conditions.

โœ” Breeding cats are carefully selected based on health, temperament, and breed standard. Cats with health concerns are not bred from.

โœ” Kittens are raised within the home and properly socialised with people, everyday household noises, and everyday family life.

โœ” Lifetime return contract. Ethical breeders take responsibility for every kitten they produce for its entire lifetime. Should circumstances change, the cat will always have a safe place to return and will never enter the rescue system.

โœ” High-quality nutrition is provided from an early age, supporting healthy growth, development, and and overall wellbeing.

โœ” Prompt veterinary care is sought whenever required.

โœ” Great care is taken when selecting homes, and applications may be declined if the breeder feels the home is not suitable.

โœ” Kittens are registered and have documented pedigrees, allowing health and lineage to be tracked.

โœ” Kittens leave with complimentary insurance cover.

โœ” Breeders are transparent, happy to provide documentation, answer questions, and arrange video calls or visits.

โœ” Preventative healthcare, including flea and worm treatments, is routinely carried out and recorded.

โœ” Ongoing support is provided throughout the kittens lifetime.

โŒ Backyard or Irresponsible Breeding

โœ˜ Kittens are often sold entire (not neutered/spayed), contributing to accidental litters and uncontrolled breeding.

โœ˜ Limited or no health testing of breeding cats.

โœ˜ No FIV or FeLV testing.

โœ˜ Kittens are allowed to leave for their new homes before the minimum recommended age of 13 weeks, missing out on important social, behavioural, and developmental time with their mother and littermates.

โœ˜ Sales may feel rushed, with pressure placed on buyers to make quick decisions.

โœ˜ Poor-quality nutrition may be used to reduce costs.

โœ˜ Kittens may be raised in isolation, cages, or outbuildings with limited exposure to normal household life, leading to poor socialisation.

โœ˜ Breeding cats may be overbred without sufficient recovery time between litters.

โœ˜ Parents may not be available to view, and health or living conditions may be hidden.

โœ˜ Little or no genetic health testing is carried out.

โœ˜ Pedigree documentation or registrations may be missing, incomplete, or unverifiable.

โœ˜ Inadequate parasite prevention can result in kittens carrying fleas, worms, or or other preventable health issues.

โœ˜ No contracts, health guarantees, or buyer protection.

โœ˜ Veterinary care may be delayed or avoided due to cost.

โœ˜ No sale contracts or written agreements outlining responsibilities and protections for both buyer and kitten.

โœ˜ Avoids meaningful conversations about the kitten and is often unwilling to arrange video calls, visits, or provide health certificates, test results, and supporting documentation.

โœ˜ Communication often ends once payment has been received and the kitten has left.

โœ˜ Shows little or no interest in where the kitten is going, asking few or no questions about the buyer, their home environment, working commitments, lifestyle, or ability to provide long-term care.

๐Ÿพ Final Thoughts

The price of a kitten should never be the only factor considered when choosing a breeder.

Ethical breeding involves significant investment in health testing, veterinary care, quality nutrition, registration, socialisation, enrichment, and lifelong support.

Responsible breeders are not simply selling kittens โ€” they are investing in the future health, welfare, and preservation of the breed they love.

Always ask questions..... Request documentation, meet the breeder where possible, and most importantly choose a breeder who prioritises the wellbeing of their cats and kittens above all else.

Because every kitten deserves the very best start in life โค๏ธ

A Little About Transparency in Breeding โค๏ธ

One thing I have always promised myself is that I will never only share the highlights of breeding โœจ๏ธ

It's easy to post beautiful kitten photos, happy milestones, and exciting updates, but the reality is that breeding isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Even with extensive health testing, careful planning, exceptional veterinary care, and doing everything possible for our cats, there are still situations that can arise that are completely beyond our control.

At CloudNine, health has always been our highest priority. All of our breeding cats undergo comprehensive health and genetic testing, and every decision we make is centred around the wellbeing of our cats and kittens. However, responsible breeding cannot prevent every complication that nature may present.

We have been fortunate to welcome many healthy, thriving kittens into the world. However, within two of our most recent litters, we experienced premature kittens and the heartbreaking loss of kittens that were born sleeping. Despite having healthy, extensively health-tested parents and providing the highest standard of care throughout, some circumstances simply remain beyond anyone's control.

These experiences are incredibly difficult and are something no breeder ever wishes to face. Every kitten is loved, hoped for, and eagerly awaited long before they arrive, making such losses particularly heartbreaking.

Many breeders choose not to speak openly about these experiences, and that is entirely their decision. However, at CloudNine, we believe transparency is an important part of responsible breeding. We believe it is important to share both the joyful moments and the difficult realities because breeding is not about presenting a perfect picture.

These experiences are never easy, but they reinforce our commitment to continually learning, working closely with our veterinarians, and always placing the welfare of our cats first. They also serve as a reminder that responsible breeding involves far more than producing kittens. It requires dedication, resilience, compassion, and a willingness to face both the joys and the challenges that come with caring for living animals.

We believe responsible breeding is about providing exceptional care, making informed decisions, and being honest about the realities that can sometimes arise. Through openness and transparency, we hope to give prospective families a genuine insight into our breeding journey and the dedication behind every CloudNine Ragdoll Kitten.

While these experiences have been challenging, they have not changed our commitment to our cats, our breeding practices, or the families who place their trust in us. If anything, they have reinforced why responsible breeding, comprehensive health testing, veterinary care, and transparency remain so important.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support CloudNine through every part of our journey โค๏ธ

๐Ÿพ Ragdoll Litter Announcement ๐Ÿพ

We have quite the story to share...

On Friday 5th June, our beautiful girl welcomed 8 kittens into the world โ€” a huge shock considering she is our smallest queen, throughout her pregnancy, we certainly weren't expecting such a large litter!

As breeders, we believe in being completely honest and transparent about every journey, because breeding isn't just about celebrating the highs โ€” it's also about acknowledging the difficult moments that can come along the way.... sharing these experiences not only promotes transparency but also helps other breeders learn, prepare, and navigate their own breeding journeys

After discussing everything with our reproductive vet and reviewing the timeline, it appears our girl may have actually conceived twice during her stay with the stud... although exceptionally rare, this can happen and would explain the events that followed

She first delivered 5 beautiful, healthy kittens with fantastic birth weights, exactly what we hope to see in a newborn litter, we were instantly besotted

Unfortunately, labour continued and she then gave birth to 3 premature kittens, this was incredibly upsetting and something we have never experienced before ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Among them was a tiny little boy weighing just 41g at birth... against the odds, he fought hard and made it through the night, giving us some hope! Sadly, despite our efforts and his determination, he peacefully took his last breath in my hands this morning ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿค

Breeding can bring immense joy, but it can also bring heartbreak.. responsible breeding means putting the health, welfare, and best interests of our cats above all else, while continuing to learn from every experience

Although her motherhood journey is coming to an end, her legacy will continue through her beautiful blue mitted daughter we retained from her first litter of four ๐Ÿ’–

For now, our focus is on our wonderful mum and her five thriving babies, while remembering the tiny angels who were simply too precious for this world ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ One Week Old Today ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿค

Our chunky Ragdoll babies are officially 1 week old today, and just look at those milk bellies ๐Ÿ˜ป

These precious babies are thriving, content, and growing beautifully.. all four kittens continue to gain weight beautifully and are developing just as they should ๐Ÿ’ž

Our beautiful girl is doing an incredible job and is recovering wonderfully while caring for her little ones around the clock, we couldn't be prouder of her โœจ๏ธ

Thereโ€™s nothing sweeter than seeing a pile of sleepy, well-fed kittens snuggled up together after a big feed, weโ€™re soaking up every moment because we know these tiny babies will grow far too quickly!

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’– Thankyou As Always ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’–

โœจ๏ธ Celeste and Brunelle Update โœจ๏ธ

Celeste (Blue Colourpoint) and Brunelle (Seal Colourpoint) โ€” beautiful litter sisters who have settled into their new home together ๐Ÿ’–

Thereโ€™s something so special about seeing siblings stay together, and we absolutely love when littermates leave as a pair ๐Ÿพ their bond is already so strong, and having each other makes the transition to a new home even more comforting and enjoyable

Ragdolls are famously sociable cats that thrive on companionship, they love being around their people, but they also benefit greatly from having a feline friend to play, cuddle, and relax with

Watching Celeste and Brunelle snuggled up together is a perfect reminder of why keeping siblings together can be such a wonderful choice ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿพ
