🐾 Dogs Running Through Pain – Why It’s Not Always a Sign of Health🐾
It’s easy to assume that if your dog is running, playing, and wagging their tail, they must be pain-free. But in reality, many dogs in the UK (and beyond) are experts at masking discomfort — sometimes even pushing through significant pain.
Dogs are hardwired to hide weakness, a survival instinct inherited from their wild ancestors. This means they may still chase a ball or sprint in the park despite joint issues, muscle strains, or even chronic conditions like arthritis. Sadly, this can lead to further injury or long-term damage if left unnoticed.
Signs your dog might be running through pain:
A subtle limp before or after exercise
Stiffness when getting up from rest
Reluctance to jump or climb stairs
Changes in mood — irritability, withdrawal, or clinginess
Shorter bursts of play before tiring
What you can do:
✅ Schedule regular vet check-ups, especially for active or ageing dogs
✅ Watch for changes in gait, posture, or enthusiasm
✅ Adjust exercise to low-impact activities if needed (e.g., swimming, gentle walks)
✅ Consider physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, or joint supplements under vet guidance
Your dog’s joy for life is boundless — but it’s our job to make sure that joy isn’t masking silent suffering. If in doubt, always get them checked. Early intervention can mean a longer, happier, and more comfortable life. 🐶💛
