PATIENT SPOTLIGHT ! 🌟⭐️
Meet Poppy the pug, an incredibly sweet 12 year old Pug!
Poppy came to see us as she had recurring urinary tract infections. She had urine tests and an x-ray which picked up extremely painful bladder stones 😢

On monday the 12th October our amazing veterinary team performed a Cystotomy on Poppy. This is a delicate procedure which allows us to safely remove the stones and prevent life-threatening blockages.

Due to Poppy being a senior patient and a brachycephalic breed (short nosed) out team took extra special care tailoring anaesthesia and monitoring her parameters extra closely.
We are thrilled to report the surgery has been a success!!!

Thanks to our incredible team abd a very loving family, Poppy is resting comfortably at home and is well on the way to a full recovery, with lots of extra pampering of course! 🐶

Signs to watch out for of potential bladder stones:
- Straining to urinate or showing pain
- Urinating in very small amounts or going indoors when they dont normally
-Blood in urine
-Drinking more than usual
If you notice any of these signs, call us ASAP!

It's Spooky Season 👻🎃

To make sure your family has a treat filled night without any tricks, here are some tips for keeping your pets safe this Halloween!

🍬HIDE THE TREATS: chocolate, raisins and sugar free sweets containing xylitol are highly toxic to dogs and cats! Keep all trick-or-treat bags safely out of paws reach! If you think they may have ingested something they shouldn't have, contact your local vet ASAP!

🛋CREATE A QUIET SAFE ZONE: The constant doorbell ringing and strangers in costumes can cause severe anxiety for most pets, increasing the likelihood of an escape! Set up a quiet area with their favourite blanket, chew toy or stuffed Kong and some calming music, for cats ensure they have food, water and a litter tray!

🕯🕸WATCH THE DECOR:
Keep candles on Hugh surfaces out the reach of wagging tails. Ensure any electrical cables are also out of reach from your pets nashers and claws.

🤡 ⚠️ COSTUME COMFORT: If you want to dress up your pet and they like wearing clothes, make sure the costume doesn't restrictions breathing or sense and never leave then unattended as they can chew/tear the costume which can cause intestinal blockages and be a choking hazard.

Make sure ID tags on colors and microchips are fully up to date!

🧨🎆 As we head into Fireworks and bonfire season, it's important to remember that while some of usove the bright lights and big bangs, our furry, feathered, and hooved friends don't share that enthusiasm!

🐎 Horses nay be better turned out in a field than stabled, as they may feel enclosed a d unable move. Owners should consult a equine behaviorismt if they have significant concerns about their horse's response to Fireworks.

🎆 If you're hosting a Fireworks display, avoid setting them off near horses, livestock and pets and dispose of any debris and remnants after.

🔥 Before lighting a bonfire check for any wild animals that may be hiding in it! Hedgehogs often use them for shelter or hibernation.

🚯 Pick up any Firework litter once it's cooled down and dispose of it safely. If left it can burn or even kill animals if they find it.

🪶🚒 Don't use sky (paper) lanterns. These aren't safe for animals or the environment. They can injure or even kill animals and the open flame can set animal habitats alight.

🎆 Fireworks 🎆
For most pets, Fireworks aren't a celebration but a threat!

With hearing thousands of times more sensitive than ours, the unpredictable bangs and bright flashes can cause severe panic. Do you know how your pet shows stress?

Dogs
🐕 shaking, panting, tense body, pacing, whining, hiding, lip-licking, drooling

Cats
🐈 Disappearing, freezing, overgroomibg, hiding, acting defensively.

Small furries
🐇 frantic burrowing, loud thunping, blind bolting, wide eyes, hunched posture, vocalisations, ears pinned back.

How to protect them
🏠 Lock up early: Bring outdoor hutches inside a quiet room like a shed or garage. Close all windows, doors and cat flaps before dusk.

🎧 Block the noise: Close your curtains. Turn on the TV or play upbeat music to mask the bangs.

🛋 Build a den: Give dogs a cosy blanket under a table or behind a chair. Give cats a high, quiet shelf. Add extra bedding for small furries to burrow under.

😌 Stay calm: Avoid over-fussing or heavily cuddling your pet as this can reinforce their fear. Across normally and stay relaxed. Use toys and/or treats as a distraction for your pet.

🐾 Check ID chips: Make sure your pets microchip details are up to date and they are wearing a collar with a mobile number on and your address. Walk them before it gets dark to avoid the chances of Fireworks on their walk.

😸 Use pheromone therapies like feliway, adaptil and pet remedy or supplements like nutracalm.

💡Got a puppy or kitten?
Start early!! Pair everyday loud noises (like hoovers or hair dryers) and recorded Fireworks sounds with their favourite games and treats to build confidence.
