Meet the very Handsome Humphrey, who paid us a visit today. What a treat! It's not every day we get to meet a baby French Lop Rabbit. He's only 13 weeks old and already weighs 3.8kg (the average cat in the UK weighs 4kg).
Here are some facts about these beautiful bunnies;
Size and appearance: French Lop is a large, sturdy breed with a dense, short coat. Adults typically weigh around 4–5 kg, sometimes up to 6 kg. They have distinctive long ears and a broad head.
- Temperament: Known for being calm, affectionate, and good with families when properly socialised. They can be relatively relaxed house rabbits but still need routine handling and space to stay comfortable.
- Lifespan and health window: Typical lifespan is about 5–8 years, though with good care some live longer. Large breeds can be prone to certain problems, so regular checks are important.
- Dental health: Like all rabbits, they need dental care. Their teeth grow continually, so a high-fibre diet and opportunities to chew help prevent overgrowth and malocclusion. Dental problems can affect eating and weight.
- Diet and weight management: A high‑fibre diet is essential. Unlimited access to good quality hay, a measured portion of mixed greens, a small handful of leafy vegetables, and a limited quality pellet. Obesity is a risk in larger breeds if overfed or under-exercised.
- Common health concerns in French Lop patients:
- Ear and facial infections due to their lop ears and facial structure; clean and check ears regularly.
- Dental disease (malocclusion, overgrowth).
- Gut stasis, especially if eating changes or stress occurs.
- Eye issues (conjunctivitis or tear staining) can occur and should be checked if there’s discharge or squinting.
- Arthritis or joint issues can appear as they age due to their size.
- Grooming and care: Gentle brushing to reduce shedding, regular ear checks, and daily observation for changes in eating, drinking, or litter box use. Ensure a safe, spacious living area with enrichment.
- Vet care and preventive measures:
- Routine check-ups to monitor weight, teeth, and overall health.
- Vaccination in the UK is focused on rabbit viral diseases; many practices offer vaccines against myxomatosis and rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD 1 and/or RHD 2) depending on risk and local policy. Your practice can advise what’s appropriate for each rabbit.
- Neutering is commonly recommended for behavioural management and health benefits (e.g., reduced risk of certain cancers and helps prevent unwanted breeding).
- Enrichment and handling tips: Provide safe play spaces, cardboard tunnels, and chew toys. Gentle handling from a young age helps with bonding and reduces stress during Vet visits.
