EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT. EVEN WHEN THEY’RE THE SAME BREED. 🐾

Two Springer Spaniels can look similar.

They can have the same working background.

They can even be trained by the same person.

And yet they can need completely different things.

One might need more confidence.

Another might need more control.

One may learn quickly but struggle with distractions.

Another may need things broken down into much smaller steps.

That’s why we don’t believe in simply following a training recipe.

We want you to understand your dog.

What motivates them.

What worries them.

What makes them switch off.

What makes them succeed.

And what they’re trying to tell you.

That’s what good training is really about.

Not just teaching a dog to respond to a command, but learning how to communicate with the individual dog standing in front of you.

LESS IS OFTEN MORE.

We see it all the time.

A dog isn’t quite doing what the handler wants, so the handler does more.

More commands.

More whistles.

More repetitions.

More pressure.

More training.

But sometimes the answer is actually to take a step back.

Give your dog time to understand.

Make the exercise easier.

Reward the right choice.

Build it back up gradually.

Training isn’t about seeing how much you can get your dog to do in one session.

It’s about creating understanding and reliability over time.

One good repetition can be worth far more than ten rushed ones.

So next time you’re training and things aren’t going quite right, don’t automatically do more.

Ask yourself:

Can I make this easier?

Have I asked too much?

Does my dog actually understand what I’m asking?

Good training isn’t about winning the session.

It’s about building the dog.

One of the biggest benefits of 1:1 training is that we aren’t trying to fit your dog into a standard lesson.

We look at your dog, your training, your goals and the challenges you’re actually facing.

Maybe your recall is great at home but disappears when there are distractions.

Perhaps you’ve got a young gundog who is full of enthusiasm but you’re struggling to channel it.

KNOW YOUR DOG. REALLY KNOW YOUR DOG. 🐾

Do you ever dismiss a small change in your dog’s behaviour?

Maybe they suddenly don’t want to do something they normally love.

Perhaps they seem quieter than usual, don’t want to retrieve, are reluctant to jump into the car or just aren’t quite themselves.

It’s easy to think, “They’re being naughty today.”

But sometimes our dogs are trying to tell us something.

One of our girls, an eight year old Springer, recently refused to pick up rubber dummies.

Now, this dog has never refused to pick anything.

So rather than assuming she was being difficult, we thought:

This isn’t like her. Something isn’t right.

We had a look inside her mouth and found a red area on her gum.

A quick check at the vets later that day revealed that she had a broken tooth.

Two days later the tooth was removed and, almost immediately, she was back to being her normal self.

It would have been very easy to tell her she was being naughty or stubborn.

Instead, we listened.

Knowing your dog means knowing what is normal for THEM, so you can spot when something isn’t.

They can’t tell us what’s wrong.

Sometimes their behaviour is the only way they can communicate it.

So don’t dismiss those little changes.

Listen to your dog. Know your dog. And trust your instincts when something doesn’t seem right.
