Ecollars - one of my favourite tools.
They can be life changing when conditioned and used appropriately. They can help provide a dog with off lead freedom with 100% reliable recall. They can be used to improve basic obedience, lead walking and also advanced obedience training. They can help deaf/blind dogs navigate the world. Anxious and/or reactive dogs to overcome their fears. The possibilities are endless.
I would recommend almost every pet dog owner (if not all), to condition their dog to an ecollar. At the end of the day, dogs are animals and not robots, and like us they can fail. And you’d rather have a safety line to help them make the right choice - I know I would.
Most people have a negative perception of ecollars, but I can assure you a few things about them: they either don’t know how ecollars work or never seen a dog wearing an ecollar that was properly conditioned. Either way, their opinion on this is based on ignorance - they don’t know and they don’t want to know.
Now, even though I recommend most pet owners to condition their dogs to an ecollar, it doesn’t mean people should go buy a cheap unit and do it yourselves without researching plenty and knowing what they’re doing or hiring a reputable trainer to help. Ecollars are expensive (£200-£300) and the conditioning takes time. It’s situations like the above, when people buy cheap ecollars and do it themselves with no knowledge or hire people that don’t know what they’re doing and using it incorrectly, that give a bad reputation to this amazing tool.
So please, ecollar train your dogs but do it safely and using appropriate equipment.
