How do we teach our dogs to be neutral?

Every dog is different.

For some dogs, especially working breeds with strong prey drive or genetic sensitivities, true neutrality can be much harder to achieve than it is for more naturally laid-back companion breeds.

So where do we start?

The best time? When they are young.

Good, positive socialisation is essential. Sometimes that simply means sitting somewhere safe and letting your puppy watch the world go by — without forcing interaction or allowing negative experiences to build.

But what about an older dog?

If they’ve experienced trauma, poor socialisation or repeated negative interactions, true neutrality may not always be achievable.

But improvement definitely is.

One of the most valuable tools we use is structured play.
Play opens up communication between you and your dog. It teaches them that there is a time to get excited, chase, bark, jump and bite…
…and a time to switch off.
It helps your dog understand what “no” actually means.

When you also give your dog appropriate outlets for their natural drives — including the opportunity to chase and bite in a controlled way — you can help satisfy those instincts rather than leaving them with a build-up of frustration and energy.
And this is where the foundation comes together.

A dog who understands how to communicate with you, has appropriate outlets for their drives, and knows how to switch off is far more likely to look to you for guidance when the world gets distracting.
That’s how we build emotional stability.
That’s how we build neutrality.

Not forcing a dog to ignore the world.
Teaching them that they don't need to react to it. 🐾

Buddy had a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend, making the most of our beautiful countryside with plenty of lovely walks.

Of course, no walk is complete without some well earned refreshments from the pub!

A perfect Bank Holiday weekend!🐕‍🦺❤️

There’s something incredibly relaxing about walking through a rainy woodland. The sound of rainfall, the scent of wet earth and the calming presence of trees create a natural escape from everyday stress.

Woodland environments contain natural compounds called phytoncides, released by trees as part of their natural defence systems. Research suggests that spending time among trees may support immune function, including increasing the activity of natural killer cells, which play an important role in our immune defences.

A woodland walk can also help reduce stress, encourage gentle exercise and give your nervous system a chance to slow down.

So next time it rains, don't stay indoors.
Put on your boots and step beneath the trees and let nature do it's thing!

Buddy was off the lead, and free to choose what he wanted to do, when he suddenly stopped and started staring at the bins.

Naturally, I went over to see what had caught his attention…

A cat!
Just curled up on the floor.

Buddy could have easily chased after it, but instead he just stood there looking at it. Then I started walking away, and Buddy simply turned around and followed me.

No chasing. No drama. Just a very good boy making a very good choice

It was Buddy’s first time in Wales, what an adventure we had!

Beautiful scenic walks, waterfalls, castles and long sandy beaches, Buddy absolutely loved exploring everything Wales had to offer.

So many new places to discover and plenty of space to run and play, we always pack the balls!😆

If you’re looking for a dog-friendly getaway, we definitely recommend putting Wales on your list.

We can’t wait for our next adventure! ❤️

Buddy has had an amazing few days away in South Wales.

Here we are exploring history at Raglan Castle.🐾

We had such a lovely time wandering through the ruins, taking in the views, and soaking up a little Welsh history along the way.

Buddy was incredibly well behaved and made the perfect sightseeing companion.❤️

Buddy is free, under no command and even has his ball, why does he still check in with me?

Because he looks to me for guidance and leadership, but also because we are family, we share a bond. Yes, being a leader is important when training your dog and a lot of people should be better at it, but developing a strong bond is also important.

How do we get both?

What I have found to be the biggest aid in achieving both, is structured play.

Structured play is the ultimate bridge between leadership and bonding. It shifts your role from a source of static rules (no fun) ,to the source of all fun, engagement, and safety.

It is incredible at teaching obedience, impulse control, listening skills and at the same time, your dog will have fun, be satiated and form a very strong bond with you.

What more could you want?

When it comes to enriching a dog's life, not all activities provide the same level of mental stimulation.
Lick mats have become increasingly popular, they are said to be an enrichment tool.
They may help dogs relax during a bath time or an examination, but they do not provide mental enrichment.

Search games offer far greater enrichment because they engage a dog's most powerful sense—their nose—and encourage natural behaviours that have evolved over thousands of years.

Dogs Are Built to Search.

A dog's world is dominated by scent.

Search games tap directly into these instincts by asking dogs to use their noses to locate hidden items, it could be a toy, scent pot from Buddy's Dog Gear, or treats.

Search games allow dogs to perform behaviours they were naturally designed to do and the benefits are huge.
