The Herd recently 💙💜🧡💚💛

Tomorrow I am going to the Festival of Horsemanship at Hartpury, to talk about Equine Facilitated Learning and Therapy, and what Equine Elements provides.

I'm going to cover a range of topics, such as:

- What is EFL and EFT, and what's the difference between them

- Who can benefit from EFT/L

- How does it work and examples of session contents

- Training/ where to qualify (and why to carefully choose your training as it's an unregulated industry)

- Why horses work so well with therapeutic work

- My journey into EFL and what Equine Elements provides

- About my wonderful Herd

- The importance of horse welfare in EFT/ L

- Track systems and positive reinforcement

I'll also have a stall, time for questions, and a little interactive experience (even if I'm a bit limited as I don't have my Herd!)

Which topic would most interest you? I can do some posts on these too!

We have our beautiful indoor space 🥳
The building has been finished since May, but I've only just got round to finishing the inside, thank you to James and my mum and dad for helping with this, and to my aunt and uncle who got me enough carpet to do the whole space! (Free and recycling, win win!)

This space is our tack room, therapy room, classroom, and my office space (I haven't organised that corner yet...) and is a very important and valuable space for our sessions.

Most importantly, Timmy is very pleased he has a proper sofa to snuggle up on!

It's so lovely to be able to see the horses and beautiful view through the doors, and to have so much light come in too.

Thank you to Nick and the team of Qubit Construction, who also did our amazing drive, and is one of our neighbours.

I am so so pleased with it, it feels unreal to finally have all the big parts of this project complete. There are still plenty more bits to be done! For the office we will eventually insulate the inside, add some form of heating, and solar panels and electrics. Other projects include the orchard/ mindfulness garden, which will hopefully be completed this autumn, some paths on the track, hedgerow and tree planting, and a groundwork space for sessions.

If anyone would like to collaborate on workshops, events, or would like to hire the space, please get in contact. Now Equine Elements has everything we need, we can really start to grown and help more people!

I've already got some exciting collaboration ls lined up with amazing friends and colleagues, and I'm very much looking forward to what the future brings ❤️🐴

This weekend just gone by I spent a wonderful day with my dear friend and sister in this equine work, Charlotte of Inspire Therapeutic Services CIC and Naja Shamanism

It was a workshop centered around self exploration at the time of midsummer, as well as exploring shamanic practice and ceremony and how this can help us.
For me, it was time for self care, and a chance to hold and explore the grief I still hold.

Emotions are funny, and complex. The post I shared last week was about being so proud of what I've built, and so grateful for it all too.
Yet woven through that is an ache and undercurrent of grief, because I so wish Cyra was still here to share it.
To see the office and the shelter, and everything as it should be.

Not that she'd care particularly much, she'd like the shelter because it is a snuggly dry clean bed (and she didn't like her nose getting grubby when she slept).

And the office, she'd like because she'd be able to look through the door and make sure I didn't work too much (or tell me to give her more attention).

So I don’t wish she was here because she'd care all that much about these new things, but because she stood and held me while I cried when it all felt hopeless and impossible.

And because it still doesn't feel right without her, and I think of her all the time.

She’d love the new enrichment additions to the track, and she would have tried very hard to eat the new grass I planted for the one day orchard.

She'd have got to know Sugar, both strong independent mares, but I reckon they would have been friends.

She'd be there with Tarran, and they would both whinney to me in the morning.

It is a strange thing to be human. To be proud, and grateful, and full of joy, whilst also being so achingly sad.

An absolutely vital part of this work, is that we understand ourselves, and hold space for our own needs and emotions.
Thank you Charlotte for a wonderful day that allowed me to do just that.

The photo is from the day after Cyra died, when Charlotte came to be with me & the Herd 🩷 (as I didn't get any photos on Sunday, a blissful day not being on my phone!)

Oh I have the most beautiful gratitude and fiercest pride right now.
An amazing day of sessions today, including a new youngster who asked lots of questions about the horses, where they'd come from, and also about me, and where I'd worked before.

They also asked, "who ran this place before you?"

And I said, "no one, I made it"

And it just made me stop for a moment, to realise I. Made. It.

No matter the trials of the planning application, and other huge stressful things (or people 😅) that meant this has been a struggle (and I'm sure it will continue to be, the best things in life are worth fighting for).

I got here, and I have the most wonderful incredible Herd with me, being the heart and soul of Equine Elements, and teaching so many people to love and respect horses.

It made me feel so grateful, and so bloody proud too.

It might come with stress, long days, endless work, feeling very tired, (and wishing I could pay myself more) but that's all worth it.

I think it's a hard thing, to say we're proud of something.

But I'm proud of this. I'm proud of what I've built.

I'm proud of my horses who were their wonderful authentic selves today.

I'm proud of the girl who did clicker training with Sugar and found it amazing when she responded to her breathing.

I'm proud of the little boy who was brave enough to sit on Cleo for the first time, and learnt to breathe to help himself relax.

I'm proud of the girl who said she wanted to care for the herd today, and enjoyed looking after them.

I'm proud of the horse owner who came for help with her own horse, and took ideas home to help her.

I'm proud of the two teenagers who I've known for years, who helped with breakfast and the morning brush for the horses and then had a lovely ride out on Cleo and Sugar.

Just an all round fantastic day.

Summer workshop for adults at Equine Elements led by Marie-Louise Flexen

Come and join us for a journey through creative expression, authentic movement, nature inspiration, and equine connections.
The day will be made up of connection with nature and the horses, alongside exploring movement, our senses, and our body's capabilities. We will involve self awareness practices, such as mindfulness, sensory awareness and breathing techniques.

The aim of the day is to explore gentle movement practice, led by their horses and their way of life, that allows us to restore our energy and reset our nervous system, becoming more present, and encouraging relaxation.

We will also explore how to allow ourselves creative self expression, whether it be through dance, art, movement, writing, song or more. Horses are incredibly sensitive and body aware, they are the most authentic movers out there. They have much to teach us about flow, authenticity, energy and being grounded.

Our Herd of horses are wonderful expressive movers, who embody authenticity, presence and connection.
Their home is Frith Field, a nature rich space with an abundance of birds, flowers, herbs, insects and other wildlife that will hold our experience. No horse experience needed.

Saturday 8th August
Arrivals from 9:30, day runs 10-4
The cost for the day is on a sliding scale of £80-£100
We will have a maximum of 6 participants, to ensure the group is small and personal.

Please get in contact to secure your spot, and to ask any questions.

It is International Equine Assisted Services Day!

I thought I'd put together a little bit about the different types of EAS, and what we offer at Equine Elements.

Please ask any questions below!
What does EAS mean to you?

Two notes-
1. This post was made by me on Instagram 😄
2. We don't currently have availability for EFT, although have done in the past through partnering with a psychotherapist. We hope to offer this again in the future.

Today I hosted an in person meeting/CPD day of my online peer supervision group, and what a fantastic day it was!

Lucy who organises this group had come up with a fab itinerary, and we covered topics from burn out to ethics to industry terminology.

It was so amazing to be with everyone in person, and to be with people who really understand this work, the challenges of it, but also it's worth and why it's so important.

We spent some time with the Herd, who told us very clearly we needed to spend more time just being!

We shared our specific challenges, discussed different topics, helped and supported each other, and shared our favourite resources.

I gave a track tour, and answered their questions about setting up a track, and showed our most popular enrichment ideas.
I also did a little demo of positive reinforcement, and talked about why I choose to work in this way and how it fits with my therapeutic sessions.

Thank you everyone for an amazing day, and to Lucy for setting up this group. Supervision is so important for good practice, and this group is supportive, helpful, and just lovely!
