The current heatwave is great for barbecues and sunbathing but less great for jewellery resin.

The pieces I create at Memory Within contain specialist two-part resin, and while it’s incredibly strong and long-lasting once cured, it can become a little temperamental during very warm weather.

Resin doesn’t care about deadlines.

If it’s too warm, it cures differently. It can generate more heat, become more reactive and sometimes needs a little extra time and attention to achieve the perfect finish I’m looking for.

I’d much rather take an extra few days than return something to you that isn’t perfect.

One of the realities of handmade memorial jewellery is that nature occasionally gets a vote too. So while everyone else is enjoying the sunshine, you’ll often find me checking temperatures in the studio and concentrating on work that doesn’t require resins - I’ll be working away at my bench, sawing and filing and soldering instead.

I’ve learned from speaking to bereaved families over the years is that grief often reaches for something tangible.

A photograph. A favourite jumper. A handwritten card. A watch that no longer works. A lock of hair carefully tucked away in a drawer - Not because these things replace the person we’ve lost. Nothing could ever do that … But because they help us feel connected to them.

Grief isn’t about holding on to the past. It’s about finding a way to carry someone forward with us.

The smallest keepsakes often become the most treasured. Not because they’re valuable, but because of the memories attached to them.

Long after the flowers have faded and life has returned to normal for everyone else, those little reminders can still bring comfort.

A quiet reminder that love doesn’t end when a life does.

“Why don’t you use UV resin?”

This is a question I often hear.

Many hobbyists use UV resin in memorial jewellery because it’s fast. It’s convenient. It’s easier to work with. But this comes with a price … it often yellows over the coming years, it’s softer, meaning that it scratches more easily. It is not waterproof (it’s often not even water resistant) meaning that it needs removed before handwashing or showering or bathing to stop the precious stone from going misty.

I don’t make jewellery for next year. I make jewellery for the next generation.

The professional two-part jewellers resin I use takes much longer to cure, a greater degree of preparation and skill, but it offers superior durability, clarity and long-term stability. It’s better able to withstand everyday wear, water exposure and the passage of time.

When a piece contains something irreplaceable, it’s worth choosing materials designed for longevity and durability, rather than speed.

That’s why every piece is allowed the time it needs to cure properly before it leaves my studio.

Father’s Day can be a bittersweet day when your dad isn’t here anymore.

Most of the year you just get on with things. Life carries on.

Then Father’s Day comes around and everywhere you look there’s reminders. Cards in the supermarket. Special offers. People asking what you’ve got planned.

And it catches you off guard.

Not necessarily with overwhelming sadness. Sometimes it’s just a quiet thought.

“I wish I could phone him.”

I think that’s what many people miss most. Not the big things. It’s the ordinary moments. The quick phone calls. Asking for advice. Telling him something that happened.

Whatever today looks like for you, I hope it brings more smiles than tears.

And I hope the memories are good ones.

Time to Unwind

Just a little note to let you know that the studio will be closed from 26th June until 6th July while I take a short break with my family.

Katie will still be looking after emails and enquiries during office hours, so if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

After what has been an incredibly busy few months, I’m very much looking forward to some family time, a slower pace, and a chance to recharge before returning to the bench.

This week marks Mens Health week.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that men don’t always talk about what’s going on.

On Thursday, we had the opportunity to attend the National Funeral Exhibition 2026, organised by the National Association of Funeral Directors.

It’s always a valuable event, bringing together funeral professionals, suppliers and businesses from across the UK to share ideas, showcase new products and discuss the future of bereavement support.

For us, events like this are about learning, listening and discovering new ways to better support the families who place their trust in Memory Within. It was wonderful to see the range of services and products available within the profession and to explore ideas that may help shape the future of what we offer.

One of the best parts of the day was catching up with familiar faces, making new connections and opportunities (even in the most unexpected places - we made friends with a spaniel) and having conversations with people who genuinely care about supporting bereaved families.

We came away feeling inspired, encouraged and full of ideas for the future.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to chat. It was a fantastic day and I’m already looking forward to

One of the hardest things about losing a pet is that the world doesn’t always recognise the depth of the grief.

They aren’t “just a dog” or “just a cat.”

They’re part of our daily lives. They greet us at the door, sit beside us through difficult days, and become part of our family story.

When they’re gone, it’s natural to want to hold onto something. A favourite photograph. A collar. A paw print. A tiny nose “boop” engraved onto a bracelet charm. Their paw print on a pendant. Ashes held safely within a ring.

Not because these things replace them, but because love doesn’t end when a life does.
