Hereās one for you foodies - do you ever check the labels of the treats youāre buying?
In a world now where lots of dogs have allergies or intolerances to things, treats sometimes have all sorts of things added for various reasons (usually palatability and/or cost!). If you fancy a longer read today Iāve listed some of the things you could find, especially in your chewier softer type treats. š
Humectants: glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol. They keep soft or chewy treats pliable and add sweetness.
Mould inhibitors/preservatives: potassium sorbate, sorbic acid, calcium/sodium propionate, sodium nitrite (jerky and cured treats), BHA/BHT, sulphites, ethoxyquin (mostly in fish and meat meals).
Sugars: molasses, syrup, dextrose, plain sugar. These help palatability and moisture retention.
Fillers and binders: wheat flour, maize or rice starch, potato starch, soya, powdered cellulose, beet pulp, guar gum, gelatin.
Colours and flavours: caramel colour, smoke flavour, āanimal digestā, vague ānatural flavourā.
Rawhide and some chews: bleaching (e.g. hydrogen peroxide), lime or chemical dehairing, and fumigation or heavy preservative treatment on some imports.
Mystery meat: āmeat and animal derivativesā with no percentage or species named.
