28) ⭐ Gastrointestinal Stasis ⭐

WHAT IS IT?
G I Stasis is a potentially deadly condition in which the digestive system slows down & will stop completely if action is not taken quickly .

Bad bacteria builds up in the intestines & releases gas into the system, causing very painful bloating, further decreasing a rabbit’s motivation to eat or drink. This compounds the problem because the rabbit will become more dehydrated, starved of essential nutrients & roughage.

Any digestive system contents will become more compact & the rabbit will have a difficult time passing it through, cause small hard poops or worse, none at all.
The bacteria can also release toxins into the liver & can ultimately cause it to fail.

⭐ CAUSES:
•A high starch, hight calcium, low fiber diet.
•Stress (loss of a bonded mate, environment change/new home etc).
•Pain from underlying issues (dental problems like molar spurs, urinary tract infections, gas).
•Lack of exercise.

Broccoli, Kale, Choy, Greens, Sprouts, Cabbage & Spinach are higher in calcium which cause bladder sludge. Feed in moderation & not daily.

⭐ SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
If your rabbit is demonstrating any of these symptoms of stasis, get them to a rabbit savvy vet immediately:

•Small/ hard f***l pellets
•No f***l pellets
•Loss/no appetite
•Lethargy/ hunched posture
•Teeth grinding

⭐ TREATMENT
Usually your vet will decide to administer drugs to stimulate the gut, by doing the following:

•Injection (like cisapride) to stimulate movement in the digestive tract.
•Pain medication (like Metacam) to alleviate discomfort due to gas build up
•Syringe feeding of Critical Care to ensure the rabbit continues to get essential nutrients

Diet change (if needed) treatments, time & patience you rabbit can make a full recovery.
Recognizing the symptoms early are very important & start treatment straight away.

⭐ REPETITIVE CASES:
•Antibiotics (like Baytril) to combat the overgrowth of harmful bacteria (used with caution because antibiotics can also disrupt the presence of good, essential bacteria)
•IV fluids which help soften the mass in the intestines.

In repetitive cases the vet, will try to determine the cause of the slowdown, please tell them if you think you may know why.
It's imperative to address any underlying conditio & X-rays may be needed to assess the cause of the blockage & gas.

⭐ PREVENTION BETTER THAN CURE:
There are several ways you can help prevent the occurrence of GI stasis.

It is important to provide plenty of fresh thick cut, tasty hay/dried grass to entice your rabbit to eat.
They should eat atleast, an amount the size of themselves daily.

Firstly, ensure your rabbit is getting a proper hay/dried grass based diet.
This diet is essential, not only because it provides the fiber necessary to keep the digestive system (gut) moving, it also helps wear down their teeth which means better dental health & less tooth problems.

⭐ WHAT WE DO FOR OUR OWN BUNNIES:
We replenish fresh hay morning & night (old hay can be left to use as bedding).

Every Wednesday, we do:
'Hay & Dried Grass Only Day'
(We use dog bowls)
Hay in racks & some in bowl (as ours are large bowls)..
topped up with dried grass.
Placing hay/dried grass in bowls makes this a clear sign, that this is their feed for the day.

Every Sunday, we do 'Hay Only Day'
Hay in their hay rack & hay is placed in their feed bowl.

We feed dried herbs & flowers only.

Why do we do this?
As mentioned above hay is very important, it also aids a healthy gut by keeping everything moving & stops blockages forming.

⭐PLEASE NOTE: Our customer's bunnies get fed as they would at home.

Last night was their first night togeather 🎉 with no major issues & i'm hoping with more time, 💙Billy & especially Dottie💛, can be more accepting & not just when it suits them.

💙 Hobnob & Oreo 💛, leave us a bit later this afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed having them again, but my goodness is 💙Hobnob malting & he's certainly not keen on me brushing him!

🏠Two Cage's in our Outhouse.
Furplast 120's, 120x56cm, air- conditioning. Daytime run supplied daily, weather permitting.
(Guinea Pigs welcome).

Our Outhouse has an opening window as well as the door for natural light & air flow. Supplied with Air-con & heating.

📣 Please do bring your own pellet feed, so that ours doesn't upset their sensitive tummies 🐰

You are very welcome to leave their carrier here with us & bring any special toy/blanket, to make them feel more at home for their stay🧸

Please Note:
We DO NOT have carpeted areas for rabbit hygiene 🦠 & disease 🦟 control reasons. All our areas are fully washable. We do supply blankets/mats which we wash with vetinary grade disinfectant 😊

🥵 In the Hot Summer Weather, every precaution will be taken to keep bunnies comfortable whilst having outside time.
Extreme Heat, could mean that they remain inside with the air conditioning.

Provisions of water bowls, damp towels, Ice blocks, covers & parasols, will be given as needed.

🥶 Extra blankets & bedding will be given in for extra warmth.

🤸Outside play time will be accommodated. Possible rotation at busy periods 🐰🐰
Again runs/grass will be washed down with veterinary grade disinfectant daily.
