🐾 June is National Microchipping Month, and it’s the perfect time to check your pet’s details are actually up to date.

Many owners assume once a microchip is done, that’s it forever… but outdated contact details are one of the biggest reasons lost pets struggle to get reunited quickly.

And remember:
• Microchips are not GPS trackers
• Indoor cats should still be chipped
• Rabbits can be microchipped too
• It only takes seconds for us to scan a chip

If you’ve moved house, changed your number or simply can’t remember which database your pet is registered with, now’s the time to check.

You may have seen this story in the news this week. 🐾

A £1.29 corn on the cob from a BBQ turned into a £5,000 vet bill. And sadly it is not as unusual as you might think.

Corn on the cob is one of the most common surgical emergencies we see over summer. Not the corn, the cob. It cannot be digested, it cannot pass through, and it causes a complete intestinal blockage that requires emergency surgery to fix. Left untreated it is fatal.

It happens at BBQs, in gardens, from bins, off plates left at dog height. Your dog will not hesitate and they have absolutely no idea it’s dangerous.

This BBQ season please:

🌽 Put cobs straight in a lidded bin the moment you’re done
🌽 Never leave plates or trays at dog height
🌽 Tell your guests, they genuinely won’t know
🌽 Keep dogs away from the food table however convincingly they ask

Summer means longer walks, garden time and windows open. It also means bees and wasps, and a very curious dog who has absolutely no concept of consequences. 🐝🐾

Most stings are uncomfortable but manageable. Some are not. And the tricky thing is you won’t always know which one you’re dealing with straight away.

Save this graphic. Stick it on the fridge if you have to.

The ones we want you to ring us about immediately, swelling around the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, collapsing, or a reaction that seems to be getting worse rather than better. Don’t wait and see on those. Ring us straight away.

Feeling hot hot hot 🥵 and not in a good way. 🌡️🐾

Whilst we’re all reaching for the ice lollies this week, your small pets are quietly struggling. And unlike dogs and cats, they cannot pant, they cannot sweat, and they have absolutely no way to tell you they’re in trouble.

Rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters can deteriorate very quickly in this heat. By the time you notice something is wrong it can already be serious.

What to do right now:

🐰 Move hutches and cages out of direct sunlight, indoors if possible
🌿 Freeze veg like cucumber and leafy greens as a cooling treat
🧊 A ceramic tile straight from the fridge gives them a cool surface to lie on
💧 Check water bottles haven’t heated up in the sun, change them regularly
👂 Mist rabbit ears gently with cool water, they regulate heat through them

If your small pet is lying on their side, breathing rapidly, or unresponsive, that is an emergency. Ring us immediately.

We haven’t forgotten about the small ones. 🐾☀️

Cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters are just as vulnerable in a heatwave, and far less likely to show you they’re struggling until it’s already serious.

The ones we worry about most this week are rabbits. They go downhill fast in heat and by the time you notice something is wrong the window for treatment is already closing. If your rabbit is lying on their side, breathing rapidly or has wetness around their nose, that is an emergency. Ring us immediately.

For every small pet owner in Stourbridge this week, save this, share it, check on them more than you think you need to.

The things we see most during a heatwave are entirely preventable. Burnt paws from midday walks. Dogs left in cars for “just five minutes.” Flat faced breeds pushed past their limits. None of it needs to happen.

Your dog cannot tell you they’re struggling. By the time they’re showing serious signs of heatstroke, it’s already an emergency. So please, walk early, walk late, keep them cool, and when in doubt ring us.

We’re here. We’d always rather you called and it was nothing than didn’t call and it was something.
