Meet Gabby Santoro GPCert (SAM) MRCVS, who will lead our upcoming CPD webinar, Diagnostic Approach to Coughing in Small Animals.

Gabby graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2017 and has worked in small animal practice ever since. She particularly enjoys working up complex medical cases and completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Small Animal Medicine in 2022. Away from work, Gabby lives in Chichester with her husband, their two young children and their small rescue dog, Alan.

The session will take you through a structured approach to the coughing patient: the clinical examination, the selection and interpretation of diagnostics, and an overview of treatment for common conditions. It finishes with case-based scenarios and an interactive Q&A.

Monday 2nd November, 12:30–1:30pm, live on Microsoft Teams.

Advanced care, on your doorstep.

South Downs Veterinary Referrals is West Sussex's Advanced Practitioner-led referral hospital, with sites in Storrington and Chichester.

Our clinicians hold RCVS Advanced Practitioner status across ophthalmology, surgery, internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. Each has undertaken postgraduate study and demonstrated advanced knowledge and clinical skill in their discipline. Together they manage the great majority of referral cases, close to home 🙌

For referring vets, we are a standalone referral team. Your client remains your client, and we work alongside you as a partner in your patient's care.

For pet owners, it means care that is tailored to your pet and your circumstances. You stay at the heart of every decision 💙

To discuss a case or a referral, call 01903 947598 or send us an email via [email protected]

Today is World Animal Day 💙

Behind every referral is a team - today we're recognising the people who care for every patient referred to us: our Advanced Practitioners, nurses, rehabilitation team and patient coordinator. Together they bring expertise in ophthalmology, surgery, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation to our hospitals in Storrington and Chichester.

Every patient we see is someone's companion, and every referral carries the trust of the vet who made it. That trust is something we never take for granted 💫

When Penny, a two and a half year old Labrador, developed a pigmented lump on the surface of her eye, her vet at Arun Veterinary Group referred her to our ophthalmology team.

She didn't need to travel far or start again somewhere new. Penny was seen by Helen Appelboam, our Advanced Practitioner in Ophthalmology, at the hospitals her family already knew in Chichester and Storrington. Helen diagnosed a benign tumour called a limbal melanocytoma. Although these tumours don't spread elsewhere in the body, they can grow locally and affect the eye over time. Penny was young, so Helen recommended surgery to remove the mass and repair the area with a graft.

Penny's surgery went very well, and she has made a full recovery. Throughout her care, her AVG vet was kept informed at every stage. Her records and follow-up appointments stayed in one place, and she now continues her day to day care with the team who know her best 🤗

UPCOMING CPD SESSION 🚨

Coughing is one of the most common presentations in small animal practice. It can also be one of the hardest to work up. Respiratory, cardiac and systemic causes often overlap, and a clear diagnostic plan makes all the difference to the patient and the client.

Our next CPD session, led by Gabby Santoro, offers a structured approach to the coughing dog and cat. The session covers the clinical examination, the selection and interpretation of diagnostics, and an overview of treatment for the conditions most often seen in practice.

We wanted to share something close to our hearts today — a story about mental health in veterinary care, and a personal loss that shaped it ❤️‍🩹

Matt, owner of South Downs Veterinary Referaals, will be taking on the Cardiff Half Marathon alongside his eldest daughter, Lily-Rose, on Sunday 4th October — running for the charity Mind. Behind the run is a story that's deeply personal to Matt: the realities of life as a vet, the struggles so many in our profession quietly carry, and a loss that changed how he sees the industry he's dedicated his life to.

Any support or encouragement would mean a great deal — whether that's a donation, or simply a message of encouragement as he and Lily-Rose finish their final weeks of training. This half marathon is only the beginning. Matt will take on the New York Marathon on 1st November too.

We'd encourage you to take a minute to read Matt's story in full, and to support him below.

Sandy’s journey back to seeing the world again!

Sandy was referred to our ophthalmologist Helen after her owners had noticed a worrying change in her vision. She had become more withdrawn, was struggling to jump off the bed and had even started tripping over kerbs.

Her examination showed significant vision loss in both eyes, so we carried out further investigations, including an electroretinogram (ERG) and CT scan. These helped rule out some of the possible causes of Sandy’s sudden visual deterioration.

The findings were most consistent with immune-mediated, steroid-responsive retinitis; an inflammatory condition affecting the retina. Sandy was started on a high dose of steroids, and the response has been fantastic❤️

At her most recent check-up, her vision had returned!

Sandy will need ongoing treatment and monitoring, but for now, we're delighted to see her back to navigating the world with confidence again 🥰

Have you ever wondered exactly what a hydrotherapy session looks like?

Our skilled veterinary hydrotherapist Abi customises each session to meet the unique needs of her patients, helping them build confidence in the water while progressing toward their rehabilitation goals. The dogs are gently walked into the tank as the water is introduced gradually, accompanied by plenty of positive reinforcement to ensure a comforting experience, even for the more anxious pups!

Hydrotherapy is excellent for enhancing strength, mobility, and fitness while being easy on the joints. It’s perfect for pets recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, or working on muscle development.
