🧠 This World Mental Health day 🌍 let's take a minute to appreciate how lucky we are to have our animal companions by our side - through thick and thin.

Whether it's getting you out in the fresh air, or someone to cuddle with on the sofa - how does your dog help your mental health?

Staffordshire Police is one of the first forces in the country to have introduced body armour for police dogs. The cameras used are the same as worn by human officers and are attached to a harness.

Great to see these hard working dogs being given the best protection! 🐶🚨

A police dog handler says the scheme has had "operational success" after it was introduced.

Where would your dog fit in?

I like the socially weird ones 😂

The one with that one best friend.
The one who has a very specific type.
The one who’ll happily walk with another dog for an hour but has absolutely no interest in playing with them.
The one who thinks other dogs are fine, but people are clearly still the "bee's knees".
The one with a tiny, carefully selected friendship group and apparently no vacancies.
And then there’s the dog who meets another dog for approximately twelve seconds and there's that beautiful, instant play connection.

Dogs can be wonderfully particular about their social lives.
And I think that gets missed when we put them into just two enormous boxes.

Social.
Not social.

There’s a whole lot living in between those two.

They can enjoy company without wanting interaction.
And that gets missed a lot by us.

Some will adore certain dogs and completely ignore others.
Prefer particular play styles.
Choose familiar friends.
Enjoy meeting everyone.
Or simply have very little interest in dogs at all.

None of those dogs need to be squeezed into somebody else’s idea of what a “social dog” should look like.

Sometimes it’s much more fun to notice who the dog in front of us actually is.
And who their little tail wiggles for.

A target stick also makes a great target! A great recall skill to learn

Ridiculously useful.💡
Simple and effective.
Uses galore.
Who doesn't want that up their sleeve?

Once a dog understands hand targeting, it can come in handy in all sorts of situations.

Moving into position.
A moment of focus before asking for something else.
Getting onto those scary scales at the vet.
Redirecting from something they're a little bit too "stuck" on.
Moving through a doorway.
Even just giving a dog a very familiar, easy thing to do somewhere new.

The simplest skills end up being the ones we use the most.
And people who use it will tell you just how "handy" it is!
