A surreal day today as Salthouse Stables closes its door to livery clients. Dusty, the Coblets, and our mare and foal have all moved to new homes today 🏡
A new chapter for all involved, despite lots of tears having been shed as we go in our separate directions, it’s safe to say true friendships have been made and no closure of business will stop that 💪🏻

One thing we wouldn’t live without?

Our trusty cameras 📸

We love that we’re able to virtually “check in” with all of our horses and ponies at any given moment. This helps put our minds at ease, gives us early warning if something seems off and gives us an added layer of security. It’s also just somewhat entertaining watching horses just being horses ♥️

THANK YOU, FARMERS MAKING HAY & HAYLAGE!

At this time of year, I like to extend a huge big thank you to all the farmers out there making hay and haylage.

As horse owners, we rely on these hard-working, resilient people who are at the complete mercy of the unpredictable UK weather to produce our horse's forage.

It was only once I got involved in making my own forage (with the help of our lovely local farmer) that I realised just what was involved. And that included nerves of steel!

The first couple of years we produced haylage from our 10 acres of Wilts pasture I almost had a meltdown, until I learned how to get it as good as possible, and realised the importance of having to hold one's nerve because you cannot control the weather!

As horse owners, we are particular about the forage we feed our beloved animals and it can be frustrating when it's difficult to find what we want.

But now I've seen the 'other side', I have much more understanding (and empathy) for the farmers who make conserved forage, and for what is available to us as horse owners.

I for one, doubt I have the constitution to be a farmer and for that reason I am so grateful to those who do, because without them I'd have no winter forage for my horses!

So THANK YOU farmers, not only for having nerves of steel, but also for working really long hours to get hay and haylage made, which we all rely on to feed our beloved horses and ponies.

And this year, an extra thank you for doing some of it during a heatwave 🥵

Please join me in a big huge THANK YOU!!! 🙏

Our next update may come as a bit of a suprise 🙈

When I was around 3.5weeks postpartum, one of our horsey mums had some unexpected changes to her life circumstances and made the heartbreaking decision to rehome her mare. She did this selflessly in order to best provide for her mare - a decision nobody ever expects or plans to make, but one that truly had the horses best interests at heart.

To my surprise, Belle’s mum asked me whether we would take her on. Obviously the timing wasn’t ideal with having just had a baby, and I certainly don’t need any more horses (we are the happy owners of 7 already), but this mare did not deserve to be passed around, sold on or end up somewhere in her late teens who would use her up and spit her out once she was no longer of any use, so of course, naturally I said yes - it was my honour.

What’s extra special about this mare though, is that she is carrying precious cargo. She has a foal cooking nicely and is doing really well in herself, even if a little fed up after this weeks heatwave.

We are, as of yet undecided about whether we will keep this foal or not, as I mentioned, we really don’t need any more horses 🙈🫣 but who knows what will happen!

One thing that we do know? Belle has a home for life. She will never need to know new people, settle with new horses or be bred from again. Welcome to the tribe Belle, I guess 8 won’t hurt ♥️
