šŸŽ Why your horse keeps falling onto the forehand…

This is one of the most common things I see.

People often think their horse just needs:

More schooling.
More riding.
More time.

But many horses are already working hard.

The real issue is often this šŸ‘‡

They’re trying to balance and carry a rider without enough support from the core and postural muscles.

So instead…

they naturally tip more weight onto the forehand.

And that’s when you start to notice things like:

• Heavy in the contact
• Losing softness
• Difficulty staying balanced
• Feeling downhill
• Struggling to carry themselves

Not because they’re lazy.

Not because they’re being difficult.

šŸ‘‰ But because they’re using the easiest movement pattern available to them.

This is why I always see core strength as step 1 šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

Because when the body starts supporting itself better underneath:

āœ” The back can begin to lift
āœ” The shoulders become freer
āœ” The forehand becomes lighter
āœ” Movement becomes more balanced

And that’s when everything else becomes easier to build.

šŸ¦„ Want a horse that feels lighter, softer and stronger?

Most people think the answer is:

More riding.
More schooling.
More asking.

But the real problem I see in horses every single week is this šŸ‘‡

Their core isn’t doing its job properly.

āŒ So the horse tries to balance.
āŒ Tries to carry a rider.
āŒ Tries to move comfortably.

Without the muscles that are supposed to support the spine and body underneath.

And that’s when you start to see things like:

• Heavy in the contact
• Falling onto the forehand
• Difficulty staying soft
• Losing balance
• Struggling to build topline
• One side feeling harder than the other

This is the bit most people miss šŸ‘€

Before a horse can move better…

they need to be able to support themselves better.

And that’s why I focus so much on mobilisation and core activation work first šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

Because when those deep postural muscles start doing their job:

āœ” The back can lift
āœ” The shoulders become freer
āœ” Movement becomes lighter
āœ” Balance improves
āœ” The whole body becomes stronger and more resilient

And here’s the good news…

You can start developing this in just a few minutes a day with simple in-hand exercises ✨

šŸŽ What should happen when your horse stretches down?

Most horse owners are taught that stretching is important.

And it is…

But this is the bit many people don’t realise šŸ‘‡

The goal isn’t simply for the horse to lower their neck.

The goal is for the whole body to start working differently.

When a horse stretches correctly:

āœ” The core starts engaging
āœ” The back can begin to lift
āœ” The shoulders become freer
āœ” The horse starts carrying themselves more effectively

And that’s what creates that lovely feeling of softness, balance and lightness ✨

But if the horse doesn’t yet have the strength to support that movement pattern…

lowering the neck alone won’t necessarily improve things.

In fact, some horses become heavier on the forehand instead.

You might notice:

• More weight in the contact
• Less balance
• Difficulty staying soft
• A feeling that the horse is leaning rather than carrying themselves

Not because they’re being difficult…

šŸ‘‰ but because they’re not yet strong enough to organise and support the movement through the whole body.

This is exactly why I focus so much on mobilisation and core activation work šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

Because when we help activate the core and mobilise the thoracic sling…

the horse is much better able to:

āœ” Lift through the body
āœ” Carry their own weight
āœ” Free up the shoulders
āœ” Stretch in a way that actually improves balance

And that’s when you start to feel a real difference underneath you ✨

šŸŽ The 3 most common reasons horses don’t feel quite right…

If your horse feels:
- heavy
- uneven
- or just not quite how you’d like them to feel under saddle…

it’s usually not random āš ļø

There are 3 patterns I see again and again in horses I work with:

šŸŽ 1. They’re not properly engaging through the core

You might feel:
• Hollow through the body
• Not working over the back
• Feels disconnected when you ride

šŸ‘‰ Meaning: the body isn’t yet supporting movement efficiently underneath

šŸŽ 2. They’re carrying too much weight on the forehand

You might feel:
• Heavy in the contact
• Pulling you forward
• Difficult to feel lightness

šŸ‘‰ Meaning: the shoulders and front end are doing too much of the work

šŸŽ 3. They’re working in a crooked movement pattern

You might feel:
• One rein harder than the other
• Falling in on circles
• Uneven contact

šŸ‘‰ Meaning: the body isn’t yet moving symmetrically or evenly

And here’s the important bit šŸ‘‡

These aren’t separate problems.āŒ

They are all connected.

Because when the core and postural system isn’t functioning properly…

the horse naturally:
• loads onto the forehand
• develops crooked compensation patterns
• struggles to move evenly through the body

Not because they’re being difficult…

šŸ‘‰ but because it’s how the body organises movement when strength and coordination aren’t yet there šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

ā€¼ļø This is exactly why I focus so much on mobilisation and core activation first šŸ’›

šŸŽ This is the bit most people miss about ā€œlong and lowā€ šŸ‘€

Lowering the neck isn’t the problem.

šŸ‘‰ What matters is whether the horse is actually able to support themselves properly through the body underneath.

Because when we use exercises that help activate the core and mobilise the thoracic sling…

the horse can:
āœ” lift through the back
āœ” free up the shoulders
āœ” support movement more effectively
āœ” and stretch into the contact in a softer, more balanced way ✨

And this is exactly what helps a horse move in a healthier, lighter way šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

BUT…

if the horse isn’t properly engaging through the body underneath āŒ

and we just try to create the shape from the front end…

they often end up even heavier on the forehand instead.

And this is where things often get misunderstood šŸ‘€

Because horses already naturally carry around 60% of their weight on the forehand.

So if the body underneath isn’t properly supporting movement…

lowering the neck alone can actually make balance more difficult for them.

That’s when you start to notice things like:

• Heaviness in the reins
• Falling onto the forehand
• Difficulty staying soft
• Losing balance quickly
• Hollowing through the back
• Struggling to maintain the stretch

Not because they’re being difficult…

šŸ‘‰ but because they’re not yet strong enough to carry themselves there properly.

This is exactly why I focus so much on mobilisation and core activation first šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

Because once the body starts functioning better underneath…

the stretch and softness start to happen much more naturally ✨

It doesn’t need to be complicated either šŸ’›

A few minutes a day of the right groundwork and in-hand work can make a huge difference here.

šŸŽ If your horse struggles to stretch and soften like this…

This is something so many horse owners experience.

They want their horse to:
stretch
relax through the body
move more freely
and feel softer and lighter to work with ✨

…but instead the horse stays short
tense
heavy
or never quite lets go properly šŸ¤”

So naturally, people try:
longer reins
more riding
more asking
more schooling.

But this is where things often get stuck šŸ‘€

Because stretching and softening don’t happen just from trying to put the horse into a shape āŒ

They happen when the horse is able to properly support movement through the body šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

If the core and postural muscles aren’t doing their job…

your horse can’t properly lift through the back or carry themselves efficiently.

So instead, they stay tight
fall onto the forehand
or struggle to maintain the stretch.

And that’s when you start to notice things like:

• Difficulty stretching properly
• Heaviness in the contact
• Losing softness quickly
• Hollowing through the back
• Falling onto the forehand
• Inconsistent balance

Not because they don’t want to…

šŸ‘‰ but because they’re not yet strong enough to move differently.

This is the bit that changes things šŸ‘‡

When the core starts to switch on:

āœ” The back begins to lift
āœ” The neck softens and lengthens
āœ” The shoulders become freer
āœ” Movement becomes lighter and more flowing ✨

And this is exactly why I focus so much on mobilisation and core activation first šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

everything else becomes easier to build.

It doesn’t need to be complicated either šŸ’›

šŸ¦„ Why your horse only feels light sometimes…

This is something so many riders experience.

You get a few lovely moments ✨

Your horse suddenly feels:
lighter
softer
more balanced
more connected through the body.

…and then it disappears again šŸ¤”

So naturally, people try to recreate it with:
more contact
more schooling
more effort

But this is where things often get stuck šŸ‘€

Because lightness isn’t something you create from the front end āŒ

It happens when the horse is able to properly support themselves through the body šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

ā—ļøIf the core and postural muscles aren’t doing their job…

…your horse can only maintain that softer, lighter feeling briefly, before falling back onto the forehand or losing balance again.āŒ

And that’s when you start to notice things like:

• Heaviness in the contact
• Losing softness quickly
• Difficulty staying balanced
• Falling onto the forehand
• Inconsistent outline
• One direction feeling more disorganised

Not because they’re being difficult…

šŸ‘‰ but because they’re not yet strong enough to sustain it.

šŸŽ So many horse owners are working really hard…

…but still struggling with things like:

• Heaviness on the forehand
• Losing softness and balance
• Crooked movement
• One rein always feeling more difficult
• Topline not really changing
• Their horse not feeling truly straight or connected

And this is exactly why I spend so much time talking about core and postural strength šŸ‘€

ā€¼ļø Because these issues are often connected underneath.

šŸ‘‰ The horse isn’t yet properly able to support and organise movement through the body.

Not because they’re being difficult…but because they don’t yet have the strength and coordination to move differently šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

This is the exact topic I’m going deeper into on my live Zoom training next week ✨

I’ll be covering:

āœ” why horses fall onto the forehand
āœ” why topline often doesn’t change
āœ” why softness disappears
āœ” how core strength affects straightness and balance
āœ” the groundwork and in-hand work I use to develop correct movement and posture
āœ” and how I approach building strength in a way that actually changes the body over time

ā€¼ļø Why your horse’s topline still isn’t changing…

This is something so many horse owners get frustrated with.

You’re doing the riding, putting in the work, trying the exercises…

…but your horse’s body still doesn’t seem to properly change šŸ¤”

So naturally, people think the answer is more.

More schooling
more time riding
more effort

šŸ‘‰ But this is where things often get stuck.

Because topline doesn’t develop just because the horse is doing more work āŒ

It develops when the body is able to use the right muscles properly.āœ…

If the core and postural muscles aren’t doing their job…

your horse can’t properly lift through the back or carry themselves correctly.

So instead of building real strength…they compensate.

And that’s when you start to notice things like:

• Little topline development
• Hollowing through the back
• Difficulty stretching properly
• Feeling heavy in the contact
• Struggling to stay balanced
• One side always feeling harder

Not because they aren’t trying…

šŸ‘‰ but because they’re not quite able to use their body properly yet.

This is the bit that changes things šŸ‘‡

Topline is a RESULT of correct posture and movement…not something you force.

When the core starts to switch on:

āœ… The back begins to lift
āœ… The neck softens and lengthens
āœ… The shoulders become freer
āœ… Movement becomes lighter and more balanced ✨

And this is exactly why I always start with simple in-hand mobilisation and core activation first šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

It doesn’t need to be complicated either.

A few simple exercises done consistently can make a huge difference here šŸ’›

This is something so many riders struggle with.

They want their horse to feel lighter, more balanced and softer through the bodyā€¦šŸ¦„

…but instead the horse feels heavy
leans in the contact
or loses balance easily šŸ¤”

So naturally, people try to fix it with:
- more riding
- more adjustments
- more asking.

But this is where things often get stuck šŸ‘€

Because balance and lightness aren’t something you create from the front end āŒ

They happen when the horse is able to properly support themselves through the whole body šŸ’ŖšŸŽ

If the core and postural muscles aren’t doing their job…

…your horse can’t lift through the body or organise movement properly.āŒ
