We’ve been so busy lately that we somehow forgot to celebrate a fairly big milestone.. Constellation Dog Training is three! šŸŽ‚

On 1st September 2023, Ryan took the plunge and opened CDT, and what a complete whirlwind the last three years have been.

It definitely hasn’t always been easy. We’ve had serious conversations about whether the business was actually going to make it. We’ve dealt with judgement from other trainers, people who were pretty convinced we wouldn’t last, venues disappearing at the last minute, services that didn’t work, ideas that totally flopped, and more difficult moments than we could possibly fit into one post.

Fast forward from our first ever Neutral Walk (the first photo!) to three years later, and we have our own community of brilliant people and dogs, a growing calendar of dog sports, a warehouse full of increasingly ridiculous equipment, and even Camp Constellation (second photo), which was genuinely just a massive pipe dream when all of this started.

Ryan’s continued to learn from some brilliant trainers, and that’ll always be a massive part of CDT. There’s always more to learn and always someone worth learning from. Somehow, though, we’ve now reached the point where other trainers are asking to come and learn from him, which still feels pretty crazy.

But, most importantly, we have all of you!

We wanted to say thank you to everyone who’s trained with us over the last three years, from those very first puppy class cohorts to our 1:1 clients, sports regulars, and everyone who’s trusted Ryan with their dog along the way.

Even if we don’t see you anymore, you’ve played a part in getting CDT here. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported, recommended, shared, booked, turned up and championed Ryan while he’s chased what genuinely started as just a very ambitious dream.

Right, that’s enough of the soppy stuff. Here’s to many more years of doing cool s**t with your dogs! 🤣

Would it be us if we didn’t post our ā€˜What’s On’ post at least a day late?

Here’s what we’ve got going on this September, better late than never! šŸ˜†

Spaces are filling up on many of our sports and walks but we’ve crammed in as much as we can, especially while the evenings are still just about light enough.

We’ll be sharing more about our new and improved 1:1 training program soon, as well as a website refresh which we think looks preeeetty cool, if we do say so ourselves.

Anyway, without further ado! Book on our website as always and we can’t wait to see you this month 🫶

Final call for our big September Barn Hunt Trials and workshops this weekend! šŸ€

Jacqueline, founder of BHUK, and Sharon, an experienced Judge and handler, are coming up to judge and put on a fantastic workshop for us. We’ve got not one but TWO Trials, with Instinct, Novice, Open and Senior classes, as well as our first ever Crazy 8’s class! We also have some Spectator spots left for our Masterclass workshop on Sunday, perfect if you want to see what is involved at Masters level, or if you’re a trainer interested in running Barn Hunt yourself.

We’ve opened up extra spaces on our RATN Novice Trial classes due to demand, so don’t miss out! With Trials in Nov and Dec too, you could have your Novice title and be working towards your Open by the end of the year šŸ˜Ž

CAMP CONSTELLATION: DAY 3 šŸ•ļø

There ain’t no rest for the wicked! After more delicious pastries, we headed straight out for our final social walk of the weekend.

A last-minute change thanks to the warm weather meant heading back to Hafren Forest for plenty of shade and water, this time tackling the Severn-Breaks-Its-Neck trail. The dogs were ace, the walk was beautiful, and it was a pretty rad way to start our final day together.

Back at camp, everyone grabbed some lunch and started packing before our final workshop: dog sports! The heat meant keeping things shorter than planned, but every dog got the chance to try lure coursing, with varying levels of success 🤣, and spring pole. Ryan also talked through mantrailing and the rest of GRC Dogsports, and how different activities can give different dogs an outlet for the things they love doing.

Finally, we came back together for a guided reflection, revisiting the goals everyone had set on Friday. From gaining positive social experiences and practising recall, to feeling less anxious, building confidence and simply having fun together, it was lovely to hear how much everyone had taken from the weekend.

And just like that, CampCon ā€˜26 was over! We said bye to our bunch of absolutely shattered dogs and humans, and were maybe just a little bit sad that it was all over.

But you may have seen we’ee already talking about CampCon ā€˜27 šŸ‘€ If a weekend of dogs, camping, workshops, walks and generally having a bloody lovely time sounds like your thing, comment ā€˜CAMP’ below and we’ll add you to the list to hear about CampCon ā€˜27 first! šŸ•ļø

CAMP CONSTELLATION: DAY 2 šŸ•ļø

Day 2 started with warm croissants and cronuts from before an early trip to Hafren Forest for our second social walk. And WOW, what a walk it was! 🤩

There’s not much better than watching 11 dogs running around, exploring and living their best lives together. Many of these dogs have worked with us through reactivity and behavioural challenges, so seeing them happily off-lead as part of the gang, with owners confident to handle whatever came up, was pretty special.

Back at camp, we moved into conditioned relaxation and self-selection, with Obie being very happy to help Ryan demonstrate gentle massage techniques to help dogs relax and regulate, followed by an introduction to zoopharmacognosy and seeing which supplements and oils the dogs chose for themselves. šŸ¤“

After lunch came our play workshop, exploring Jay Jack’s Window Theory and how play can create clarity and expectations. We then worked with individual dogs on everything from building play with their owners to developing confidence playing with others.

After another little social walk around camp, it was time for the evening activities!

Ryan was chief BBQ’er, despite being a vegetarian 🤣, while everyone got stuck into ā€˜Sip & Paint Your Dog’, with Prosecco obviously improving the artistic quality.

We wrapped up around the fire with marshmallows, stargazing, good conversations and frequent contributions. Tooootally not cult-like, although we are apparently all now members of Ralphie’s cult šŸ˜‚

An absolutely packed Day 2 - bring on the final day!

CAMP CONSTELLATION: DAY 1 šŸ•ļø

After months of planning, Camp Constellation was finally go! Friday was all about settling in, getting to know each other and setting the scene for the weekend ahead.

We kicked things off with introductions for humans and dogs, handed out the CampCon goodies, and spent some time setting goals for what everyone hoped to get out of the next three days with their dogs.

Next up was our Functional Characters workshop, exploring the different characters, where we might find them within a group, and starting to think about how they applied to the dogs at camp.

Then it was time for our first social walk, heading through open fields and shady woodland. The dogs got to settle into the group, practise being 10/10 around the resident sheep, and it was cool to apply the Functional Characters in context!

Back at camp, after some downtime, the awesome team at made everyone wood-fired pizzas and garlic bread, followed by tasty cookie dough and ice cream!

We wrapped up with the CampCon Quiz, with rounds such as Guess the Dog Breed, True or False: Ryan Edition and If My Dog Was a Human… Lots of fun was had, mostly at Ryan’s expense. šŸ˜†

By 11pm, everyone was tucked up for some much-needed sleep before a VERY full Day 2!

And that’s a wrap on our first ever Camp Constellation! šŸ•ļø

What a bloody great weekend we’ve had. Our first Camp Constellation and a holiday that is the culmination of so much planning that Ryan has wanted to do for so long. A chance for owners to enjoy their dogs and just have fun with a bunch of other people who also think that a weekend away with their dog is the best thing ever.

We had multiple social walks and workshops on everything from play and functional characters to conditioned relaxation, self-selection and dog sports. With group circles to set goals and reflect on them, and shared pizza and BBQ in the evenings with a quiz and ā€˜paint and sip’, the weekend was jam packed and I think I speak for everyone that both dogs and owners were shattered by the end!

Seeing dogs and owners we’ve seen at their most difficult moments absolutely thrive in situations like social walks, being off-lead and chilling out around other dogs, just made us beyond proud. We’ve got so much to post to show off just how amazing you all were!

So thanks so much to our fantastic first cohort of Camp Constellation attendees for being our guinea pigs, it was a pleasure to have you join! Thanks also to Suzi and Joe at Belan Bluebell Woods for the most amazing venue to explore the beautiful Welsh countryside from. You bet we’ve already got plans for 2027! 😁
