Yes folks our open day is just around the corner
Saturday 4th JULY 3 weeks on Saturday put it in your diary guys - this is an open day with a difference?
Not only will we be doing plenty of special offers on koi - koi foods - koi treatments - all your dry goods
In fact everything you need for the modern koi pond and come to think of it - the old fashioned koi ponds as well.

Then we will do a chopstick style draw for placing first second third choose your koi take it home and show it some love ❤️

Treatments- potassium permanganate continued.
Part 2.

Before I go onto pp dips I would just like to mention that potassium permanganate strips oxygen from your water leaving low oxygen levels
If we leave the pp in the water and let the pond take care of it naturally ( and your pond will take care of it eventually) you are still leaving your koi in water with low oxygen levels?
Hydrogen peroxide HP increases oxygen levels massively - so after a hard pp session I always like to HP not only to clear up any pp and making my 💦 water clear again but increasing oxygen levels helping my koi to revive .
I’ve lost koi in this part of the treatment in the past and find it to works best for me.
PP then HP
Like I say I’m NO expert and this is only my opinion.

Moving on

PP dips - why pp dip ?

First of all my pp dips are made up of 3 grms of pp (potassium permanganate)melted in hot water then mixed with 5 black buckets of pond water let an air stone mix your bath for 10/15 mins then I will place a koi in the bath for a maximum of 10 mins a minimum of 7 mins
I find that anything less than 7 mins fails to do the job effectively?
I always leave the air stone on whilst treating.
Be accurate with your timing- I find 10 mins in this strength solution works great for me but remember you treat at your own risk - all treatments have a danger element to them.
Always cover your treatment bowl with a net to stop your koi jumping out.

Let’s talk builders bucket 🪣 it’s not 5 or 10 litres
As in the picture a builders bucket is 3 gal that’s
14 Litres
So 5 buckets is 15 gal 70 litres
Very important to get your measurements right.
on sick or small koi I will use 6 buckets of pond water to 3 grams of potassium.
An extra 3 gal.

What can pp dip be used for?

Pp dip can be used on a koi with raised scales
To kill bacteria and parasites

When your pond won’t PP for 3/4 hours PP dip can be very useful

When you have a sturgeon in your pond and can’t PP the pond - PP dips can be very useful
But why anyone would want to keep a sturgeon is beyond me 😂🙈 ha ha only kidding 🤔………🐉

Sometimes stubborn parasites that are hard to move
Because of heavy mucus protecting them pp dips help to break down the mucus and kill the parasites.

Can be used when adding a new koi to your collection to make sure it’s not taking anything into your pond

You may find that a sick or sulking koi - a week fish often breaks out with parasites
I will often use a dip on that koi so I don’t keep subjecting my koi to full pond pp treatment

You may have koi that have bacterial problems or sores knocked scales pp bath is great for them

No HP required just a 10 min dip and back in the pond

So why PP bath and not salt bath ?

For the reasons I have listed salt even at high levels will no longer kill parasites and bacteria
It will help to raise the salinity of the koi and it will help sores and wounds
But for me ( salt baths ) apart from what I’ve just mentioned are no longer affective??
This once again is just my view and I’m not proclaiming to be an expert.

I could not run my business without salt it’s very important indeed

But as a bath I find PP does parasites bacteria sores knocks much better than salt
In fact I can remember the last time I did a salt bath in my opinion there are now better options
Just my opinion??

Also when you are suffering with a fluke outbreak that won’t go away you’ve tried everything

PP your pond or use PP dips the day before you use your fluke treatment this helps to reduce mucus and expose the flukes to your fluke treatment
Very rare that a PP followed by Lernex pro doesn’t clear them up.

Don’t just tip your PP solution away you can use it to clean and sterilise nets and other equipment??

Now you can’t do that with salt 🙈

PARASITES AND TREATMENTS
What to use / when to use / and how to use ? Treatments for bacteria and parasites.
Before we start as I’ve said many times I’m not and don’t proclaim to be an expert- only use these treatments and practices if you are confident to do so always expect something to happen and most importantly do your homework and have everything you need to hand.
All treatments are dangerous and come with risk .
We don’t treat because we want to
We treat because we have to for the welfare of our koi.
These are my measurements what I treat at - and I will except no responsibility for third parties.
Every koi keeper treats at there own risk.
Let’s start with PP
Potassium permanganate
Used for many parasites tric costia chilla
Good for bacteria also good for cleaning undissolved waste
First things first
Never guess what problems you may have - scape and identify?
If you haven’t the equipment get another koi keeper to help you.
I’ve identified trichodina so I’ve decided to do a PP or potassium permanganate treatment.
Heavy mucus on the head was my initial indication the odd flick made me do a scrape to confirm trichodina.
Let’s get started
Firstly I weigh out my potassium @ 3 grams per 1000 liters
Mix with hot water from the kettle
Add to a bucket of pond water mix with air stone for 15 mins.
My prep for pp is-
Clean my filter turn off Uv
Check ph and kh adjust if needed
A clean pond always treats better than a dirty pond because of undissolved waste.
Then over the next half an hour I add my PP mix.
The objective is to keep it purple for 4 hours -
Not 5 or 6 - 4 hours
If I see fish struggling I may reverse the treatment at any time ?
It’s very important to watch over the pond for the full 4 hours
I very often see YouTubers saying they are treating for a client and the client will reverse the treatment after 4 hours ??
Who is watching the koi in the second and third hour ? These treatments can go wrong at any time believe me I’ve had it happen many times.
And I personally think that this is not very professional (just my opinion)
Like I say the objective is to keep it purple for 4 hours ( if possible)
Now sometimes it will burn itself out especially if there is undissolved waste in the pond in the pipes bottom drain bottom of the filter ?
And the water goes a dirty brown
Now you have to decide
To top up pp level
Or to reverse the process with HP
Hydrogen Peroxide
If you top up you do so with huge risk
Koi are already tired/ sore
Ask yourself can they take anymore??
If No reverse treatment
If your koi are still looking good you can treat again - But
Only half the original measurements
So 11/2 grams per thousand liters
Mix as the start BUT
Do not just tip it in your pond
Bit by bit very gently try and get your water purple again - once purple stop adding it
Once again the objective is to keep it purple for 4 hours using as little PP as you have to.
After 4 hours it should be going a dirty brown colour with dark foam on top
The brown colour indicates it is spent it has stopped oxidising ( working) and the brown left behind is magnesium which is like a McDonald’s for your filters .
Some leave it in ? - but
I like to clean up my pond get it clear again - reverse any pp still in the pond
I do this by using H P or hydrogen peroxide you can use it @ 3 or 6 percent - food grade
You can get it from your local koi shop
Dosage- 3 percent @ 50 ml per thousand liters
6 percent @ 25 ml per thousand liters
Simply measure correctly into a measuring jug and pour straight into the pond you will see the chemical reaction take place and after about 20/30 mins it all becomes clear
Pp is now neutralised.
Hydrogen peroxide it eats phosphate -
Phosphate feeds algae and blanket w**d so by using Hp after it helps keep check on algae and blanket w**d.
Hydrogen peroxide reverses potassium permanganate and same in reverse potassium permanganate reverses hydrogen peroxide.
Never Ever attempt to do a pp treatment without hydrogen peroxide to hand it’s very very important .
After the 4 hours are up hp has gone in after half an hour to clear the uv,s can go back on normal pond life is restored.
Always stay for the full 4 hours your koi may need you
Always have HP to hand
If in doubt and think things are not going to plan ?
Reverse treatment and try again in a few days time
Always use an accurate scale
( not the kitchen scales) they are not accurate enough and your wife/husband may hit you round the head with there rolling pin 😂.
And be careful all treatments are dangerous and can and do kill koi.

Water 💦 purifiers ?

Do you need one ?

Now as I’ve said many times I’m not an expert and stand to be corrected if I get anything wrong?
When I ask people how they dechlorinate their tap water ??
These are some of the answers.

I use sodium thiosuphate to remove chlorine so I don’t need one ?

So let’s try to answer the question?
First of all Sodium Thiosulphate is a nasty chemical?
Why ?
First of all putting any chemical in your pond is a risk it has consequences especially when there are none chemical options.
What does sodium Thiosulphate actually do?
Well it sits in your water and neutralises chemical compounds such as chlorine and chloromines but it will also neutralize pond treatment such as blanket w**d removal and parasite treatments OH! And while we are on the subject - pond detox ? I’ve seen people putting this in weekly??
For what ? Once again none of your treatments will work properly if you are doing this and bigger problems are on there way - stop it immediately use pond detox in an emergency only.
Also bottled dechlorinators why add chemicals to remove chemicals leaving behind chemicals??- I think I said that correctly??

Three stage water filters
Are a great bit of kit for any pond enthusiast great value for money around £65-£70
Consisting of a particle filter for larger particles obviously but the water authorities add coagulants such as iron sulphate this binds with small particles and you particle filter takes them out
In the centre you have a carbon or GAC filter and last you have a carbon block between them they will neutralise your nasty,s such as chlorine and chloramines making tap water safe.
great bit of kit in my view every pond owner should own one.
If you have got a big pond you will need a 20 inch or if you have a really big pond a big blue.
We have dechlorinators by evolution Aqua that are full of active carbon I use mine in combination with my 3 stage filters so that my particle filter and carbon block are always in play - on a big blue for instance you would fit a particle filter - it doesn’t ever look like it does much but very important to fit one - 🤔
The more water you use the bigger the dechlorinator ???
But and it’s only my opinion ( and I’m aloud one) I 🤔 think.
Their is a lot of overkill going on in the industry people with 10,000 liters with 2 big blues is your water that bad ??
As a koi dealer I go to places like koi wholesale - yes Ricky Stoddart a koi wholesaler 30 odd ? Ponds but where are the big blues ?
Now if my memory serves me correctly he has done a video where he pumps pond water through bone char in a big blue ?? - one YouTube video.
But when you walk around koi wholesale all you see is the odd 12 in dechlorinator from Evolution Aqua
Slowly topping up tanks and that’s all he uses.
Remember new fishing gear is made to catch anglers NOT fish 🐟.
OH! And don’t get me started on the ones that constantly say “ we look after 💦 water - not fish 🐟 “
NO we have to look after both to be successful in this hobby.
I gas off any nastys in the water by having my hose on spray ??
I use rain water ??
I live in a good area my waters fine ??
What a load of rubbish.
Last year in Derbyshire the water system was contaminated chloramines were recorded @ 25 mg parts per million - it was a miscalculation by workers working for the water board
Normal chloramines levels used to clean pipes and sterilise are used @ 0.2-0.5 mg max. parts per million every koi keeper in the area was affected everyone with constant trickle in lost all their koi anyone that did a filter clean or water top up lost all or most of their koi collection - even koi outlets were seriously affected with big losses .
Even inline filters can’t handle toxicity at them levels
I’m sure I’m right in saying chloramines is a form of bleach ?
Accidents can and do happen
But on a normal day to day running of a koi pond chemicals such as-
Chlorine - coagulants - fluoride- phosphate- ph adjusters like calcium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide- chloramines can be removed or at least bought down to acceptable levels by using an appropriate water dechlorinator.

Then after reading this - ask yourself?

What the hell are we drinking??
