Why Do we keep koi ??

I have asked myself this question many times and still don’t know the answer ??

As a koi hobbyist I have had good spells and I’ve had bad spells and I have had spells where I’ve almost filled the pond in ……
I think most koi hobbyists can relate to this - the hobby can be very frustrating at times???
From nitrite spikes to leakages and finding out where it’s leaking from ?
Green water 💦 to bacteria problems.
Pond crashes to drum motor breakdown- blanket w**d to fin rot
Fungus to parasite problems.
Not only can it be frustrating but it can be very expensive ( don’t tell the wife ) 😂
Many years ago as a fisherman I have witnessed some of the most magnificent majestic scenes
From otters to kingfishers
Salmon travelling upstream swimming up rapids grayling and brown trout raising to dry flys - carp and chub taking bread from the top the watching a pike b**g go under not to mention the seasons the weather the scenery wildlife and sunsets that will stay with me forever.
I don’t do much fishing these days but my pond is a tiny slice of what I’ve just described-?
The excitement when the fish see me knowing they are about to be fed
The clear water 💦 parting as they gracefully swim towards you
Anyone who has Lge Koi in there pond will know what I’m talking about
To know that these koi have been grown on by myself its simply magical
These moments are very special
You can’t bag it or box it takes many years of hard work - to get to this stage and make no mistake koi ponds are hard work.
To build a pond up to this level - lge koi swimming in crystal clear water is no easy task many will give up.

But when you get there - WOW
What a fantastic feeling
And then the very next day -
It all begins again the cleaning the water changes the maintenance.
So why do we keep koi ??
I believe it’s in us
A walk or a fishing trip or maybe a holiday
Something planted a seed
And after that we were destined to have a koi pond.

One question I often get asked ?

Why Five Towns Koi ??

This is part 1 of 2
I never dreamed of opening a koi shop
Ever ?

Let’s start at the beginning .

I worked in my previous business for 43 years eventually selling up just after lockdown .
I have been a keen koi enthusiast for over 40 years during lockdown I bred my koi as a hobby
As a result I had 1000,s of fry
Which I decided to grow on
By chance I was in a local Chinese supermarket and they were packing some fish tanks away -previously they were used to sell crabs and lobsters.
I managed to purchase these tanks for my fry to grow.
I had a unit in Nile street that was connected to my previous business I moved the purchased tanks into the unit and decided to try and sell the koi to the public? You might say the business was born ?
We opened the doors and nobody came
We advertised and still nobody came
Eventually after lots of advertising on social media people started to come
Why Five Towns Koi ?
I’m getting their - honestly
After selling our home bred koi it was time to decide whether to carry on or Not ?
We decided to carry on both for the business challenge and the love of
Koi - not for financial reward that’s for certain.
But we would need to get a pet shop licence
Before this we needed a name ? To apply for a licence??
I always remember
Arnold Bennett who wrote Anna of the five towns.
I never understood why he would say five towns- not six ?
His answer was - he considered Fenton to be a none entity ( in his words)
He also said five towns had a better ring to it -
As I drove into through the mother town - Burslem I could see all the evidence of a thriving town fabulous buildings - after all this was the birthplace of Josiah Wedgwood the home of the pottery industry.
Company’s known world wide
Spode - Royal Doulton-moorcroft - wade - Wedgwood these companies employed half of the population in stoke on Trent creating great wealth but now all empty - derelict building’s in disrepair - the mother town itself was now the none entity?
Wedgwood employed 1800 people in
Nile street the same street as my koi business now all gone

What would Arnold Bennett say ?

To be continued…

27/07/2026

So Why Five Towns Koi ?

The pottery industry Employing half the population of Stoke had clearly put Stoke on Trent on the world map
Companies like
Wedgwood - Spode - Royal Doulton - Minton - Moorcroft - Wade
All based round the mother town of Burslem.
In 1927 Michelin tyres came to Stoke More pollution in the air
More employment but lots more pollution.
In 1980,s I could taste the rubber in the air at 4:00 o’clock in stoke ?? When they opened the factory doors.
Make no mistake back then -the pits or the factories or the pollution in the air took you early - life expectancy was low -
many had tough life’s back then.
In the 1861 census there were 4065 child workers registered
593 were under 6 years old??
These kids were doing 12 hour shifts 6 days a week.
Just think about that for a moment??
But this got better when the clean air act in 1956 and 1968 due to the great smog of London ??
What they don’t tell you is that pollution was created 3 hours north in city’s like Stoke where life expectancy was half of our southern brothers and sisters .
We had to suffer this pollution for 20 years but it was only addressed when it reached London ??
In 1978 the last bottle oven was closed down .
In 1995 Wedgwood moved out to Indonesia to save money.
At its peak Wedgwood employed 1800 employees in Nile street Burslem alone - in the mother town ??
Now all gone
Now The mother town itself is a none entity??
In 1948 the pottery industry employed 79,000 workers
In 2009 7,000
2026 4,000
Making stoke on Trent on of the most deprived places in the UK.
So back to the name
Why Five Towns Koi ?
If Arnold Bennett can call Fenton a none entity?? On a whim
After the destruction of the pottery industry in Stoke -
After the destruction of Burslem itself making it a none entity??

We are 6 towns
But the name
Five Towns Koi -should remind us of the destruction that has been done to our city and what was our great industry here in the potteries.
Good enough for Arnold Bennett
Good enough for us.
Five Towns Koi
Nile street
Burslem
Stoke on Trent.

And Proud to say
I’m from the potteries.
