Grade 6 Florrie dog!!! 🏆

My goal was to reach grade 5 this year, Florrie decided to overachieve. With one win left to get and only a few shows with not many runs entered left to go this year I was in no rush. Florrie had other plans of course. She had a slightly wild 2nd place on Friday, then having got the crazy out of her system a nicely controlled win on Monday.

I’ve taken a very different approach to agility with Florrie this year for various reasons. We would normally have done 3 or 4 runs per show, and shows most weekends, with my thoughts being that it takes a couple of runs to calm her down. This year I’ve entered far less shows, and less days at shows. We’re doing 2 runs a day, 3 at most, and picking courses carefully. I’ve been careful to mostly avoid shows that trigger her noise phobia while working on it (although haven’t always been successful). We’re even going to shows not to run at times. And while no one will ever call her calm, and I’ve definitely blown my criteria in the ring on several occasions, the result has been a generally happier and more listening Florrie.

A final chance at Novice cup this week, a couple of shows in limbo then a couple in her new grade before we take most of the winter off to train the skills we need, and to get out and finally manage some hoopers competitions instead.

I nearly didn’t post this video as it’s not our finest run, and shows me not sticking to any of our criteria in the ring 🙈 but I’m actually really pleased with how Florrie ran.

We were camping at Cornwall agility show for the week, during an absolute heatwave which meant limited exercise and very limited runs, I think we managed 9 all week! Florrie was struggling with worse anxiety than normal, which is possibly hormonal, and her noise sensitivity was worse than ever which meant the tannoy and the road were an issue. On several of her runs she spooked and ran at the end, meaning catching her was a challenge.

This run was a final attempt to see whether she was happy enough to run after taking the previous two days off. I had a catching party stationed around the ring and was prepared to withdraw all further runs if she left again. My only goal was for her to be happy, which is why I didn’t correct the broken wait or contacts (I’m going to pay for that later!) She obviously got the memo and put in a speedy if messy clear, meaning we’re now one win away from Grade 6! Which we are not in a hurry to get 😂

A couple of weeks off for Florrie now while I work on her fitness and confidence, and pray for some cooler weather

Florrie is wondering whether it’s time for her to search for a new handler after the current one somehow messed up her steeplechase final 🙈

The qualifying run, first one on the video was lovely and smooth, I mostly let her get on with it. Unfortunately I might’ve got a little competitive in the final and decided to run. Poor dog wondered what on earth was going on, she still held it together until I also threw an arm up at the last jump, causing her to run past it 😭

Note to self, leave Florrie to get on with her job!

Between the heat and the rain it’s been a quiet couple of weeks, but I wanted to share this video of Florrie winning Grade 5 jumping at SWAT, just before the heatwave kicked in.

Florrie is struggling as an only dog at the moment and her noise sensitivity has got much worse. So I’ve been sticking to local shows, only doing a couple of runs and lots of training round the rings, with my only goal for her to be happy.

So I was over the moon with this run, a couple of hours earlier she was struggling to leave the car because of bird scarers and I nearly went home. A quick play in the practice ring settled her and she went on to win this run by 16 seconds!

We’re looking forward to a few days at Blackdown coming up, again no expectations, lots of training and a chance to catch up with friends. Now it just needs to stop raining ☔️

Fly 2009ish - 5/5/26 💔🐾
Finn 26/3/13 - 10/4/26 💔🐾

It’s taken me a while to write this as although both dogs were old, I really never expected to lose both in 3 weeks. I always said that Fly would do her best to outlive Finn, and the feisty old girl proved me right.

Finn left sooner than I expected, he’d been struggling with illness and had a couple of seizures and it looked likely there was a tumour somewhere. Despite being pretty ill at the end he was able to enjoy some lovely walks and ate all the food he wanted.

Fly’s wobbly old legs couldn’t last forever though and after a really happy last few weeks, and even a camping trip right at the end, her poor tired body had had enough. She was feisty til the end, attempting to bite the vet while being sedated!

While it’s hard it seems right that they left almost together, they were inseparable for nearly 13 years and while their personalities couldn’t have been more different they just made a perfect pair. Finn was a peacekeeper (unless food was involved) and always a happy boy. Fly was an anxious little control freak, who gained huge comfort from Finn and learnt how to play and just relaxed more around him.

I’ve got a lot to thank these two for. Fly was such a problem dog that I ended up learning so much about dog behaviour to help me live with her. And Finn was supposed to be my agility dog but as he was so wonky I discovered hoopers and scent.

Me and Florrie are finding the house very quiet right now, but we’re taking some time to adjust and work on her training. She’ll get a new little brother or sister dog at some point probably next year, I just hope she’s as good with them as Finn, and eventually Fly, was with her.

Some were preparing for the start of the show season after a few months off competing, and Benji was coming back to hoopers after several years break and looking fantastic🔥
Loved the space and surface at Conquest Centre I’ll definitely be back there for more course running, and look out for a post about regular classes coming soon!

Happy 13th birthday Finn 🥳🎂 somehow the boy made it to his teenage years! He’s broken himself so many times (mostly through stupidity and not listening) and had a good few health scares so I have no idea how he made it but I’m glad he has.

He wakes me up at least once a night because he accidentally got off the bed and thinks he needs permission to get back on, he whines when I eat or if anyone has a better bed / chew / toy than him, his recall is becoming increasingly questionable and his health isn’t great but he’s absolutely loving life still and so much fun to be with. Hoping he might follow in his sister’s footsteps and mange a few more birthdays🤞

It’s so nice to have some sun at last ☀️ I’ve had poorly old dogs on and off for a couple of weeks but both seem to be doing ok now, enjoying their walks and refusing to acknowledge that they aren’t puppies any more!

We had a lovely warm mud free walk at Woof Hall Dog Field today, Florrie got to practice her weaves while Fly provided a useful distraction digging in the sandpit
