Dogwood Adventure Play - Dog Walking Fields & Training Centre Dogwood Adventure Play has two purpose built secure fields available to hire on a sole-use basis. As Welcome to the North East's first Dog Adventure Park!

An enriching environment for your dog to run, play, sniff, discover and learn. A place for you to relax. Dogwood Adventure Play is set across seven acres of countryside with two secure fields and a training paddock. We’re between Darlington and Stockton and easily accessible from both - though we serve clients from all across Tees Valley and the North East and Yorkshire. Our purpose-built parks are available for you and your dog to hire on an individual basis all year round, seven days a week. Ideal for dogs that can’t be let off lead in public places – perhaps because they don't enjoy meeting other dogs, or for those that don’t have great recall skills, puppies or adult dogs who need to work on training in a secure environment, owners of rescue dogs who need to bond with their new companion, or anyone else who enjoys watching their dog run free. You have exclusive use of the park during your booking. The coded double-gate entry system and carefully timed slots mean you won’t be disturbed. For extra peace of mind, in-field parking allows you to lock the gate before letting your dogs out of your vehicle. Adventure Play® frames increase confidence, range of motion, strength and balance, while the Sensory Gardens are made up of a variety of smells, surfaces and textures to engage all the senses and reduce stress and anxiety, encourage dogs to be more secure in their surroundings, and provide mental stimulation and enrichment. Dogs love exploring the fascinating environment rich with scent, while their happy humans sit back on a bench and relax. Where would Dogwood be without Scentventure®? Well, just another field. Dogwood is a SCENTVENTURE PARK where your dog can sniff, climb, stretch and develop strength and confidence - all the components needed for calm, relaxation and focus. Enriched environments like Dogwood are well-known by behavioural experts to reduce behavioural problems such as reactivity. Dog Trainer, Scentwork Instructor and Canine Enrichment Specialist, Katie created Dogwood Adventure Play when she needed a safe space to exercise her own reactive rescue dog Lao. Since then, Dogwood has hosted thousands of off-lead adventures, helped hundreds of reactive and distracted dogs and their owners enjoy stress free walks via Katie’s signature training system Scentventure, and created an international community of Club Dogwood members who are enjoying calm walks and adventures, no matter where in the world they live. Katie brings over a decade of experience at Dogs Trust, qualifications, accreditations and hundreds of hours of learning from the top minds and organisations in the industry to ensure you and your dog always benefit from the latest scientific research and behavioural studies. She also offers a consultancy service to help other people open their own Dogwoods around the country. Community is at the very heart of everything we do. Dogwood advocates for rescue dogs, donating Adventure Play sessions to local rescues every week and hosting fundraisers throughout the year. Now you and your dog can enjoy the same fear-free, off-lead experience as Katie and Lao at Dogwood Adventure Play, the North East’s first dog adventure park. Your dog was born to sniff, discover and play, and at Dogwood you can give them exactly what they need whilst you enjoy a relaxing, stress-free adventure walk with your best friend. Get in touch to find out how you can join our exclusive dog adventure community. As seen in The Times, Edition Dog, BBC, Puppy Post and more.

''We've tried other secure fields in the area but they're not a patch on Dogwood. Our dogs cry with excitement when we say 'Dogwood'. The original and best!''

The big September news is that I am back at Dogs Trust - after 7 years!

I’ve been itching to return some day. I never planned to leave, things just got so hectic with Dogwood and Scentventure. So at the beginning of the year I started planning seriously about how to return.

It’s different enough to be the perfect compliment to the work I do under Stress Free Dog Walks, but the mission remains the same: the best life possible for dogs and their humans 🫶🏼

Of course I’ve already fallen in love multiple times, and shed a few tears. As always, surfing and Franco have been doing a very good job of keeping me focused.

Ep 2: How to choose the perfect location for your Calm Co-Walk 🐾 For anxious, reactive or over-excited dogs, a Calm Co-Walk is a socialisation walk that teaches them to walk nicely together.

So, where to hold your first Calm Co-Walks?

Socialising is intense! So look for somewhere with a variety of natural or manmade features to break it up: grassy patches, bushy edges, nooks and crannies, different surfaces, things to climb on, and sniff around.

❌ In a big open space like a field, the dogs will likely spend the whole walk focusing on each other.

The ideal location lets you move around together while keeping the right amount of distance between the dogs 🦮⬅️➡️🐕‍🦺

Speaking of which, exactly *how far away* should you start from the other dog? We’ll cover that in next week’s episode. Distance will make or break your success, so stay tuned! 🍿👀

Same time next month for another Calm Co-Walk?

If you’re new here, welcome to my Calm Co-Walk series! 🤗 Episode by episode I’m taking you behind the scenes with my 2-year-old rescue dog Franco and Emily’s puppy Wren, so you can follow along in real time with your own dog!

🎬 The Calm Co-Walk cast:
⭐️ The Protagonists/Antagonists: Franco (orange & white Bracco) & Wren (little black Lab)
⭐️ The Blonde Bombshell: Creedie, Wren’s big brother playing a supporting role. He’s already very sensible, so not our main focus.
⭐️ The Crew: Emily & I. Direction, wardrobe, transport and catering.

To be continued.

Ep 1: Your first Calm Co-Walk 🐾 I know socialising your dog can feel intimidating or overwhelming. What if it goes wrong? Where do I even start? 🤯

So I’m going to hold your hand and take you through it! Step by step, in real time, with my 2 year old ‘high-energy’, ‘high-excitement’ rescue dog Franco, and baby-brained puppy Wren.

Follow along if your dog is reactive, anxious, easily-overwhelmed or fast to frustrate. Or if they get silly and lose function of their brain cell, like Franco & Wren here. (And their ears - no matter how large they are!)

This strategy is also ideal for new or young dogs, and ‘important relationships’, like family members’ dogs where you *really* need them to get along.

We’ll avoid the first common mistake: letting the dogs get up close and personal right off the bat. That’s only going to cause you bigger problems down the line.

Instead, for our first Calm Co-Walk we started with enough distance apart that Franco & Wren could listen to us and follow our cues, paired with familiar activities that are SO simple both dogs could easily succeed.

While simple, the benefits are already working beneath the surface:

🧠 Bear & Return to Sender: Franco learns that even though Wren is exciting, it’s also very rewarding to check back in with me.
🧠 Sausage Logs & Goat: Low arousal, calm activities Franco enjoys. Wren is there but she’s not the centre of his attention. He’s learning to co-exist with her and stay connected to me.

I’ll show you how to train these activities in another episode. For now, just use anything your dog already knows.

Same time next week for another Calm Co-Walk? (Let me know what you’d like to see in this new series!) 🍿

Next time I’ll show you how to pick the perfect walking route for your own Calm Co-Walk.
