We hear it all the time...

“I’d love to try raw, but it’s too expensive.”

“It seems way too complicated.”

A lot of people write raw feeding off before they’ve even started because they imagine it’s going to cost a fortune, take over their kitchen and require six chest freezers in the garage. 😂

But it really doesn’t have to be that way.

Raw feeding can be transitional, adaptable and built around what works for you and your dog. You don’t have to change everything overnight, and you certainly don’t have to know everything before you start.

So, we’re breaking down some of the most common misconceptions we hear from dog owners who are considering raw feeding, whether that’s simply to explore a different way of feeding or because they’re looking to better support their dog’s overall health and quality of life. 🐶🥩

And remember, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.

These bird rich regions are home to many of the incredible species we know and love in aviculture.

Today, we’re heading Down Under 🇦🇺 to introduce TWO beautiful Australian arrivals:

❤️ Eastern Rosellas
💛 Yellow Red Rump Parakeets

❤️ EASTERN ROSELLAS

Stunning, colourful and intelligent, Eastern Rosellas are active birds that need plenty of space to fly, explore and stay enriched.

They need:

🦜 Plenty of flight space
🌿 Perches, toys and enrichment
🥬 A varied, balanced diet
🚿 Regular bathing opportunities
👀 An owner who understands they may be more independent than cuddly

💛 YELLOW RED RUMP PARAKEETS

Yellow Red Rumps are a beautiful colour mutation of the Red Rumped Parakeet. These active, alert Australian grass parakeets love to fly, forage and explore.

They need:

🦜 Spacious housing with room for horizontal flight
🌾 Foraging opportunities
🥬 A varied, balanced diet
🪵 Natural perches and enrichment
🚿 Bathing opportunities
🏡 Careful consideration when choosing companions and housing

Both species can be incredibly rewarding for the right home, but their space, enrichment, diet and social needs should always be considered first.

Hello! I’m Emily, the Animal Room Manager here at Smith’s Pets in Portrack, and here are a few things you might not know about me!

Animals have always been a huge part of my life. I was brought up around them and always knew that working with animals was something I wanted to do.

But before joining Smith’s, my career actually looked very different! I was a qualified personal trainer, waking up at 4am and teaching up to four different gym classes a day.

Birds are a particular favourite of mine, especially zebra finches, which I’ve bred myself in my own aviary at home. Although, it’s safe to say my love for animals doesn’t stop with birds!

I have a conure called Boo, quails, Bengalese finches, a tortoise, a bearded dragon, around four fish tanks and, of course, a cat.

You might have also spotted me working in Aquatics a few times, so I’ve managed to turn my love for pretty much everything fluffy, scaly, feathery and slimy into my job!

Make sure you say hello next time you see me in the Animal Room!

Does something seem a little ‘off’ in your aquarium? 🐟💧

Changes in your fish’s behaviour or the appearance of your water can often be the first sign that something isn’t quite right. From gasping at the surface and clamped fins to cloudy water, algae or sudden fish losses, checking your water parameters is a great place to start.

Bring a sample of your tank water into Smith’s Aquatics and our team can test it for you, talk through the results and help diagnose what could be going on.

💧 Water testing is 𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 Monday to Friday.

Due to weekends being particularly busy in store, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗶𝘀 £𝟱, unless you’re purchasing products with your test, in which case the 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱.

Where possible, we’d really appreciate customers popping in during the week for their water tests. This gives our team more time to properly go through your results and offer advice without the weekend rush.

Just remember to bring a fresh sample of your aquarium water with you!
