Yesterday we asked:

What should a groomer consider when deciding how to safely handle and restrain a dog?

There were lots of possible answers:

🐾 The dog’s size and weight
🐕 Breed and body shape
❤️ Age and general health
🦴 Mobility or physical limitations
👀 Behaviour and body language
😟 Signs of fear, stress or discomfort
📝 Any information provided by the owner
✋ The part of the dog being worked on
🛁 The grooming procedure being carried out
🐕‍🦺 The most appropriate restraint for the individual dog
⚠️ The safety of both the dog and the groomer
⏸️ Whether the dog needs a break or the procedure needs to stop

How many did you think of? 😊

There isn’t one handling method that suits every dog.

Professional groomers need to continually observe the dog, assess the situation and adapt their handling throughout the groom.

And most importantly — restraint should never compromise the dog’s welfare. 🐾❤️

SAFE HANDLING — IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT KEEPING A DOG STILL

Every dog that comes through our doors is different.

Some are confident, some are nervous, some are elderly, some are wriggly — and some simply don’t like certain parts of the grooming process!

At Pampers Grooming Academy, our students learn that safe handling means adapting the way we work to the individual dog.

🐕 Using appropriate restraint
👀 Watching the dog’s body language
✋ Handling calmly and confidently
❤️ Considering age, health and mobility
🐾 Supporting the dog correctly
⏸️ Knowing when a dog may need a break

Restraint should never be about forcing a dog to tolerate something.

It is there to help keep the dog and the groomer safe while allowing us to work comfortably and humanely.

Good handling is one of the most important skills a professional groomer can learn. 🐾❤️

🐾 Meet the lovely Isla ❤️

I thought I'd share a wee video of Isla having her groom and explain why we always say it's more than just a groom at Pampers.

There's so much more to grooming than making a dog look and smell lovely. We're also checking their skin, coat and general wellbeing as we go.

It's something we've always taken seriously at Pampers, and I think it's important that owners know just how much goes into their dog's visit.
