Personalised dog training that empowers you with practical skills to transform you and your dog's relationship I've been helping care and train dogs for over a decade. I've worked with gun dogs (Labradors and Spaniels, adventure Border Collies, and number of pets (many of whom were rescues). The past three years with my Malinois (Dax) have seen my skillset deepen dramatically, as we've explored adventuring, scent-work, and protection sports together. We did all this while working a demanding full-time job, running a business, and navigating a turbulent a rather turbulent time. Knowing how it is to balance my life and my dogs, I'm putting my practiced skillset to use in K9 Contact, and offering premium services to help those in similar situations. Various Qualifications:

Start rough then refine. Behaviour is an interaction between your dog and the environment they're a part of (and you fit in there too). Behaviour isn't stored in the dog, to be selected from a menu and executed on command (this is one of the major mistakes of conditioning even though they tried to avoid it). It's contextual. So how you flow into a behaviour can totally change the context. You need to go through the whole thing as you'd do it - but starting with a simple version of this is okay.

Good training looks ugly. If its all going smoothly then its going nowhere, you want to be in that challenge zone where you're breaking stuff and learning from it. At the same time if you're just hitting your heads off the same challenges then it's time to step back and look at your training process (or ask me for help I guess?).

Why would your dog be engaged with you when you're just pulling them everywhere? The one who does the work does the learning. Get comfortable with the pause as they work out what you mean when you give a signal. We have a habit of rushing through to the end - slow down! Let them practice actually doing the thing, or they'll never figure it out.

Behaviour is about problem solving: so let them solve the problem! Giving your dog the answer all the time means they practice getting the answer from you - never actually understanding what's going on for themselves. The difference is massive, with many professionals already aware how much more powerful a behaviour learned through shaping is compared to one "taught" bit by bit.

Every morning before training I'm reading and studying behaviour. Its not just to keep my practice embedded within currently behavioural science, its mostly to get ideas. The ecological approach isn't being used by anyone else yet, so I'm lucky to be the one who's introducing us to modern behaviour science.

I know your instinct is to try give your dog more help when they aren't getting something, but you've got to just let go and step back. Trust in their ability to work it out (it will just take longer than you want it to - perhaps whole minutes longer!). You aren't helping them figure out what's going on by giving them even more to understand. One. thing. at. a. time.

Behaviour *is* problem solving. They'll never figure it out if they never have to figure it out! I know its tempting but you can't "get it right" in the back garden then head out into the world ready to do the behaviour - your dog is not a computer. Behaviour is an interaction between your dog and the environment of which they are a part (and you too). So go practice the interactions!

Consider what you're asking your dog to recall for. Not some transactional "i'll give you a toy if you come back", but for your dog what do you actually want? Give it purpose - a real reason that maters. Where your dog goes "oh wait for me!". This will change from dog to dog, but you can start even with the classic "recall cause we're about to leave" and run away.

There is more to making a truly great recall, but this is a central consideration without which you'll be sure to struggle.

Never mind what I can do with your dog, what matters is what we can do together. Coaching is building the relationship with your dog that actually works for you. Organically working through the problems you really have. And with our ecological approach (the same that's used in leading international sports teams) we get results others just can't.
